Just happened to me today. Sounds like a lifter or something under the valve cover. Loud ass tapping and the simptoms described in the title. What could it be? Could I have lost a rocker? Or maybe the timing jumped?

Oh yeah, this is on my 90 laser rs-t.

Thanks for any and all input.

Well I'm in the process of taking the timing cover off to check timing and here is what the timing belt looks like...

Sorry the pic is so crappy, I took it with my webcam with my laptop upside down.

So what do you think is under the timing cover? Broken balance shaft belt caused the timing belt to shred a bit and jump timing? I'm hoping like hell the valves are ok.

YIKES! alright well the only thing i would do is pull the bottom timing cover, see if you can see anything busted, then try and line up the timing marks, if there off by a few teeth u might need a head job...GOOD LUCK!

Pulled all the belts and pulleys off and got the timing cover off and as I suspected, the balance shaft belt snapped causing the timing belt to shred on the edge and the timing jumped. I retimed it and started it up and yep, it runs but I need a new head. Oh well.
