lots of play in shifter while in gear

i have a pretty sizeable amount of play in my shifter while in gear...whats the cause of this and what do i need to do to fix it?

Hey, my shifter has a lot of play while in gear too, especially 2nd gear.
www.vfaq.com > Shifter > Shifter teardown for rebuild (It's the 3rd from the bottom)
Try tightening all the pivot points on the shifter.

Or , which is quite common in 1G's, the 5th gear synchro nut comes loose. It sounds WAY worse than it really is. Seach the VFAQ for that first because if you keep driving with the tranny with the loose fifth gear synchro nut it can wreak some havoc on your tranny. I've repaired a few already if you have concerns. PM Me.

Another thing to check is the shifter linkage mount in the engine bay. If that mount or it's bolts are loose, it will definitely cause shifter play.
