ok... this is probably a dumb question, but here it goes... I am re-ringing my motor and the head is off... I measured each head bolt with a micrometer and there is no stretch... they are all the same size... Can I reuse these, or do I HAVE to get new head bolts?

go ARP head studs and never look back. They are nonstretch type and will last between multiple head swaps without giving up security of clamping force. 95 shipped from most vendors. IMO, an extremely worthy investment. Especially if you run lots of boost (or have a heavy foot  )

FYI, ARPs are actually cheaper than OEM headbolts.

+1 Even if there is no stretch now you might see some in the near future with mods, my stock bolts did not hold up that long after reuse I actually broke one off in the block after trying to change my leaky hg.

thats what I was thinking... well, its clear what I have to do... thats wack.... A Honda wouldnt do this to me.... HAHAHAHAHAHA

sorry...

YO you are doing all that work and you are gonna sweat over a $100 for ARP's. Come on man , Just consider it as part of the project and do it right. You might regret it or wonder what if i got arp's maybe this never would of happened questions in your head down the road. Hey I understand we all ain't millionaires but you gotta do what you gotta do .

Just my .02, Good Luck

Joe

haha.. no.. its cool... I just dont have any money left and I cannot work without my car, so I guess I have to rob somebody... haha... is he joking? :)

and Im not spending more than 500 for all the parts i am getting.... this is just another $100 I dont have... but yeah... im not going to half ass it on this... the last thing I want in to have to change the damn head gasket again... I know the motor has been rebuilt before... how can I tell if I have ARP already?

If you have head studs, then they are studs, if you have bolts then they are OEM bolts. :thumb:

there are a bunch of bolts with Allan wrench wholes in the top... they are not studs... im confused... would they say on the bolt if they were ARP?

Then you dont have ARP. You have factory head bolts, its a 10mm allen head if remeber correctly. Trust us on this beg, borrow , and steal for the mone, well mabey not stea:nono: . But invest in the studs. I pruchased mine for $79 at a local performace shop. Shop around you should find some, well worth the money.

I called autozone just to see if they carried head bolts and they do.... Felpro is the name of the company that makes the head bolts.... and they are only 40 bucks..... seems like a good deal to me

I'll keep this short, if you come on here asking for opinions, the please listen to them. As you can tell most of us on here told you to get ARP head studs. If you dont believe us, then do a search on here or any other DSM site as well. You will find that almost everyone will tell you that if you already doing a headgasket change or have the head off, to put some ARP's in there.

If you go with anyother, rather it be the felpro or oem, when they stretch and you have issues, please dont come on here or anywhere else talking trash about DSM.

Do it right the first time.

What headgasket are you going with? Make sure you do a good search on here as far headgasket and everything related to that. That will save you time and money in the long run.

Quoted for truth :thumb:

Now, let's see. 40 bucks for the felpro headstuds and probably another 40 for the head gasket = 80 bucks and you get a hit or miss with quality. ARP + OEM headgasket = ~ 160. An extra 80 bucks to ensure your boost machine works well for the remainder of it's life? Wheres the question in that?

And just to make it easier:

www.extremepsi.com for ARP's
www.mentormitsubishi.com for headgasket

Um, Bolts stretch, thats what they do... When you put them in and torq them down, the tourqing is actually causing the bolt to stretch and exert pressure on the thread chamber....

ALWAYS CHANGE YOUR BOLTS, DOESN"T MATTER IF YOU USE THEM ONLY ONCE OR NOT...

ok... first off... I dont need the rude-ass replies... Im new to the DSM game... your status says new member too, bro.... I know what head bolts do.. I have taken everyone's opinion and used it in my decision... This is my first mitsubishi motor and I am asking what I can to learn what I can... as you probably know, I worked on honda's for the longest time... and they werent as picky about head bolts as these motors are.... so whats wrong with asking questions about a seemingly good deal? A LOT apparently... I've been to alot of forums for a lot of different cars, but for some reason, people seem to want to bump their gums on THIS forum about a newbie who is asking a simple question... MY bad for asking about the felpro bolts... didnt know that dumb questions are not allowed here....

thank you all for your help... Im getting ARP...

Hey dude,
Don't let the "rude guys" bother you. A stupid question is the one that was never asked. So Good decision an the ARP's you'll be glad you did. So ask questions no matter what and ignore the "rude" response and just read the answers. But do remember , search alot, usually your answers to the stupid question are out there. Someone else already got flamed for asking it already ! LOL

Have a good one and Good luck,

Joe

I looked around a little bit, but I also didnt see anybody who actually measured them with a micrometer to check for bolt stretch...

You are right... Dumb questions are unasked one's...

Again.. thanks everybody here for your CONSTRUCTIVE opinions... ARP is the obvious choice of champions.. haha

Go to the local junkyard, and pull them off out of a car! this will work for best results. If you can afford new ones go spend the $$$$$. Actually I do not think the stock head studs are strech to yield.

Keep in mind with the cometic head gasket you have to have a clean/flat surface on both the block and head. (someone correct me if Im wrong) I know there is a headgasket that needs both done and has been talked about on here a lot. I do believe it was the cometic one.

As for being a New Member, yes that I am. Your question was not dumb, but you failed to listen to most of us telling you to go with the ARP.

Glad you decided on the ARP.

Happy boosting buddy!
