i just bought a 93 talon tsi awd from a friend. there are a few problems with the car its burns oil and someone before him did a horrible job on trying to install a fmic. he told me he heard that since the air filter is very clogged oil is sucked into the intake. i know i have a lot of work to do. im replaceing a lot of shit. but i want to find out if the turbo is blown or if what he heard could also be the problem. the car has not been driven for almost a year it has started up no problem but it burns oil. if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

a dirty filter wont make your car burn oil it will just make your fuel economy suck. definately take a look at your turbo

a dealer told him that in some of the newer turbo cars if the filter is clogged the engine will suck oil out of the engine and many poeple think that they have a turbo problem but they actually dont all they needed was a new air filter

a 93 isnt a newer its rather older actually

i know that much
this is information that he has told me though
and i was trying to find out if this information is true and i can relate it to my car
becuase if there is an easier way to solving this other than buying a new turbo i want to know

LOL so i guess ill check the shaft play and go from there.

would a hole in the intercooler also have any effect on this situation?

Until you find a replacement on eBay or the Classifieds, you can get away with using JB Weld on an intercooler. Keep in mind you're getting away with something if you do it. Look for corrosion on the main tubes, not just the cooler area.

No having a hole in your intercooler will make your car run like crap cause it is Sucking in unmeterd air when at idle and spitting out all your metered air when under boost. (correct me if I am wrong about idle) Your burning oil is comming from your turbo or somthing internal. Rings, valve stems somthing to this nature. Here it is again, check for shaft play. I know it is easier to try and find an alternet solution to the problem or an "easy fix" but sadly alot of the times this is not the case. If you have no shaft play then go from there to diagnose the problem. If you do, well time for an upgrade/rebuild.

alright

but a little bit of oil leaks out of the intercooler
so would that indicate shaft play

Not necessarily. The breather from the valve cover is plumbed into the intake pipe. So over the years it is normal for some oil to collect in your intercooler. Now if your talking about alot of oil then its a pretty good sign.

its not a lot but its enough to leak out of the hole thats in the intercooler
if i do a rebuild on the turbo would i have to take the it to a shop to get it balanced?

so everyone that said to check for shaft play is correct
i took off the intake and i moved the turbine up and down and it moved almost a half inch
is this really bad?
i heard its ok if it moves up and down but not in and out
and another thing someone did a 2g turbo conversion on this car
isnt the 1g turbo bigger or better?

i took the intercooler to a radiator shop and i asked him about the jb weld fix
he told me the jb weld wouldnt stick to aluminum
is this just another bullshit story to try to get me to pay for him to fix it?

You should barely be able to feel any. Also check for in/out play. You shouldn't feel ANY in/out play at all.

well there is a lot of up and down play
i havent checked in and out

but im probably just goin to get a newer turbo
