ok... this D***HEAD sold me his very clean 91 tsi AWD.... it was smoking real bad when load was on the motor.. he said it was the turbo's seals and to replace it... he gave me another turbo... so Im outside looking under the hood and I notice that vapor (smoke) comming out of the dipstick and out of the oil cap on the valve cover.... my padre said it was blow-by caused by bad rings (most likely).....

OK... the real question.... what would be easier and more cost effective:

rebuild the bottom end (new rings, bearings, etc..)

or get another 4g63t and swap it in....

well.. if I can find another motor, that would be faster.... I KNOW I can rebuild the engine... hell.. I could probably change the piston rings and all the with the shortblock in the car... does anyone know where I can get another motor... preferebly for around 500....

this was supposed to be a daily driver... so I need it done asap... and Im a broke mofo, so I have to do it cheap

WOW.. your kidding.... a PCV valve can make smoke come out of the dipstick and the oil cap? the smoke out the back is not the problem.... its the smoke inside the crankcase that Im worried about....

I have a new(er) turbo and a manifold... really, all I need is a longblock with nothing on it and I should be good....

How can I check the PCV valve??

Well that is the porpouse of a pcv valve (Positive Crancase Ventilation) if the valve gets clogged the it can no longer take the pressure and gases out of the crank case. so now how to check it just take it out and blow in it there should be little restriction my guess is that if that is the problem you would find that crud is blown out of the pcv valve when you blow in it.

I just blew through the PCV hose and there is no clog.... could it be in the valve cover where the clog might be.... its an awful lot of smoke comming out of the oil cap and dipstick to be a pcv problem... any other suggestions??

anyone know where to get a cheap rebuild kit

ooo yeah... if I rebuild it, do i HAVE to get the crank machined and all that stuff?? I really dont have the extra cash for machining.... i mean.... if I have the get the cylinders honed thats one thing... I plan on doing the bottom end rebuild with the motor in the car... Ive done it to a honda, but I know that these motors can sometimes be tempermental

I still think you should do a compression test why not that will tell you for sure! then post the results also if you want more suggestions post more info how dose it run off idle how about on the top does it acelerate good does it hesitate doe it even run anymore is the power smooth does it take a while to start the car Ect.

also they don't recomend machineing our cranks polished is fine but not ground. Although many people have done it.

see... thats the thing.. the motor runs good... it starts up no problem... idles just fine.... im guessing a little power loss (this is my 1st dsm)... the turbo spools up... you can hear it.... the power band feels nice... I can totally feel when the boost kicks in... its just smoking hella bad.... the car is TOTALLY drivable except for the fact it smokes.... badly

I know if I need to bore or deck the block, I have to pull it.... but other than that, I shouldnt have to....

I am telling you preform a compression check if you can not afford to buy one then go to the parts store buy one use it but be careful with it then return it after you are done or auto zone has a tool rental just give them a deposit of how much the tool costs then bring it back they give the full deposit back if you don't want to do this then I can not help you any more.

Good luck,
Brandon

I know I know I know.... I am going to do one in a bit.... im just killing time untill my boy gets home... then I drive over there and do the compression test... thanks for your help

Check out TopLine brand for a rering kit if its needed.....since your motor isnt knocking then your shouldnt worry about having any work done to the crank.....but first do a compression test....if the compression is low drop like a half ounce of oil in the cylinder,if the compression goes up after putting a little oil in there, then you have to replace the rings.....also if you use the OEM composite head gasket then you shouldnt worry about decking the block but at least get the head resurfaced or check the head for straightness.

OK.. results of compression test:

Cyl. 1-3=60 psi

cyl. 4 (by tranny?)=30 psi

I squirt some oil in the cylinder and it went up about 13 psi..... but 60 psi is low as hell, isnt it?? I dont know, because I dont have a shop manual....

what should I do and what should I get... im thinking about just getting a rering kit and a head gasket and rebuilding the head a bit...

PPPLLLLEEAAASSSEEE let me know what you think... I know a decent amount about cars and how they work, but this will be my first build without the aid of a seasoned professional (thats how I learned about El Honda)..

thank you very much

we arent talking about valve covers anymore...

ok... I just heard a bunch of stuff about topline gaskets by a couple of pus**es that were arguing like women on the forum....

supposedly the topline gaskets are gar-bage'....... I want to know, because I found a good price on a rering kit for my motor... I figure I can get away with fixing that and then dumping some money in to the head to be rebuild a little.... just stock stuff, considering im not going for MAJOR power.... have any of you had problems with the topline kits?

OOO YEAH!!! what should the compression be at when I was doing the test?? like I said... 3 out of 4 cylinders were at 60 psi, and one was at 30 psi... which leads me to believe piston rings and maybe valve seals and seats?? Is this assumption correct?

and where can I get an oil pump from if the topline one is wack?
