My 97' GSX has DSMLink. I've had the car since Thanksgiving, and I can't get DSMLink to connect to my car. I've been through all the troubleshooting with the moderators and administrators and I can't get it to connect. I need to tune my car so I can drive it(it's been sitting since I got it and had to get a new battery-so it lost it's tune) Basically, I'm fed up with DSMLink and I'm not getting any help. I want to purchase apexi's safc neo, and wanted to know am I going to run into any problems running the stand alone with the dsmlink chip in the ecm? Will it conflict or will the stand alone over ride dsmlink?

BTW, I'm not looking for ideas on how to troubleshoot DSMLink, I just want to know if the two will conflict.

I can't get DSMLink to connect to the car. I get the error - io failed: connection timed out.
I am using the Keyspan adapter that everyone says to use. I tried switching the wires. I am selecting the correct COM port and have tried changing the COM port.

HOWEVER, I read in the wiki DSMLink troubleshooting guide to test pin #1 (the diagnostic pin) on the OBDII port on my car to make sure it is getting 5(+) volts when my car is switched on. I get 2.75 volts...so I ran the wire directly from the ecu to the diagnostic pin and now I'm getting 0.3 volts.

Plus I went through the whole DSMLink troubleshooting page.

Have you contacted Dorris about the problem?

I have never heard about that problem. I do know that with DSMlink, if I put a USB mouse in my desktop it switches my com port and then I have to switch it back to get DSMlink to work. It wont work with the mouse plugged in.

Which adapter do you speak of? Is it the adapter that goes from the serial on the obd2 connector to a gender changer and then to a USB connection? If so, did you pick it up from Radioshack?

Dorris wasn;t much help. Someone said "it may be an ECU problem but that is rare". I am using a keyspan adapter that I bought at CompUSA.. the one everyone says to use. It IS the correct one. I know for SURE that it is using the right COM port, its not something like that.. I checked everything. Is there anyway my ECU could be grounding out or something like that, the kid who had the car before me ran a few wires off of the ECU wires, I have to check which ones.

Anyway, why would DSMLink work before I replaced the battery in the car and afterwards not work. Did I mention the car won't pass 3500RPMs since I've replaced the battery, it just shakes like there is some kind of cut-off.

Well, I am far from a DSMLink expert. I am still new to it myself.

I had wires run off my ECU when I had a SAFC2, perhaps the wires were not reconnected correctly. Did he tape them up or solder them?

I dont know what could cause the shaking after a battery install. that is just weird.

The wires are taped up, I'm not sure now because it looks like he only tapped into them and then changed his mind. The wires are wrapped with electrical tape, they are intact and have not been cut (I am mainly talking about the two power and two ground wires). Nothing is connected to these wires. Like I said earlier, they told me on another forum to run a wire directly from the OBD diag pin to where is connects to the ECU since I was getting 2.75v and should have been getting 5v. After doing this I am now only getting .3v and DSMLink still will not connect. I can connect to the ECU using my boyfriend's VAG-COM from his Audi, but the program will not allow you to tune.

Thanks, I guess I'll try to troubleshoot DSMLink a little more, before buying a safc. It's just been driving me nuts, I'm ready to pull my hair out.

true, SAFC and 880 injectors is not a good idea. instead of spending the money on a SAFC maybe you can take your car to a dsm shop and have them find the problem. I would never get rid of my link for an safc

If your dsmlink is not working, it's either:

The ecu which is probably not since the car runs
The cable you are using
The laptop you are using
The obd2 port on your car

So just go by process of elimination. Buying an afc is certainly not an option i would go with. Plus you have big injectors which won't work with an afc.

If you do have DSMlink, go on the DSMlink forums, not here on tuners... They cant be of much help... If you have a problem with the source, just go to the source... Just to let you know, I had that same problem, and you just have to log out each time, and restart from scratch... keep doing it over and over... if not, check the device manager, configure it for your Comm ports, then try again... if not, check your Data rates, it should be a 9600 KBS (kila bytes per second) anything other than that, it wont connect... it will "time out" cause it is passing way too much data really fast... Tom should have helped you out, I know he did for me... and if all else fails... double check the ecu, the wiring and the pins in the DB9 connector... Dont give up hope, I know I didnt... Email me if you have any other problems...

and no, its not the Laptop you are using... Its your configuration, trust me... All computers speak binary, just like all of us on here speak english... We can understand one another... What cable do you have? The Dynex brand (from Best Buy) works, so does the Radio Shack ones, and some other ones do too, check on DSMlink forums... those moderators on there are much more helpful and knowlegdeable than the ones on here... by far...

As stated. SAFC will work fine with the Link. But it would be like trading a 98 Supra TT for a Civic Si, just not a sensible move. Go back to the Link forums and try to get some help, it is easy to come by 'round there

Just a FYI: The SAFC is reffered to as a piggyback, far from a standalone. You see the only thing it does is modify the airflow signal from the MAS beofre it gets to the computer.

Did you do the clutch wire mod? If so, it possible that you connected it to the wrong switch and your sttuter box is kicking in.

When you switched the com port did you just go in and plug the usb into another port or did you actually go into the dsmlink program, hit options, hit the config tab, and select a com from there? Mine works in the External com 1 port, but dsmlink has to be set in the config to com 6.
