I recently purchased a 90 Eclipse SOHC 1.8 liter for a daily driver until my Talon project is completed. It died when driving she told me. Got it for $100. 114k miles. I found out that there was compression getting into the cooling system, so I first pulled the cylinder head, had it surfaced, replaced the head gasket, exhaust gasket, intake mani and tb gaskets. Was filling up with water and it started pouring out of the water pump. So, tore into that yesterday and also found the balance shaft belt in pieces. So replaced both timing belts and tensioners and water pump. Battery was dead so installed new battery but the car just cranks and cranks and cranks, won't start. I double and triple checked my timing and it should be ok - it freely spun over by hand before it went back together and cranks fine. The car did sit for +/- 1 year so I'm going to drain the fuel tank and put some fresh gasoline in it first and retry but if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks for the space-

Did you do a compression check to see if there are any problems there? Is there spark? Fuel? Did you double check all the stuff you took off and make sure it's installed right. Not too familiar with the 1.8 but does it have a dist. or CAS. When you took the head off and it had a CAS did you install it 180*. Did you get the dist. in time if it has one of those. Lots of questions to answer first.

Alright - spark is good. Fuel pressure is good. I did a compression check tonight and found 0 compression across the board....any ideas now? I'm thinking that the timing is off but I double and triple checked everything before it went back together. I have never timed an engine before and I followed the directions from Alldata.com - all the timing marks lined up perfectly. Is there any other source of directions on how to time a 1.8 sohc motor? Vfaq doesn't have anything. What is the easiest way to check to see if it is timed properly? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks-

Assuming it ran before the repairs, I would look at the alldata again to be absolutely sure that the marks line up. No compression usually means timing belt off. I can't remember if the 1.8 is an interference motor or not. I have a timing belt book at work. "Alldata" and if I can remember to look, I'm old and might forget. I 'll let you know. Or you can look in yours to see if it's interference or not. Just be careful or you will be pulling the head again.

Good luck

Yes, according to alldata it is an interference engine. And yes, it did run up the point where it died. Since the water pump was leaking, I can only assume it leaked out all of the coolant and then overheated the engine and blew the head gasket. Which is what I have repaired so far. The timing belt 'b' was shredded when i tore it apart - lucky it hadn't taken out the main timing belt yet. It had about 3-4 teeth missing from it also. The only thing I don't understand in alldata about the timing marks is the one for the crank pulley. It says the timing marks are on the front cover. Which there is a mark with 3 lines on it and on the pulley there are 3 dots so that is what I used to line it up. Hopefully that was right. I'm afraid of tearing it all apart myself again because I have no idea what to change at this point.

Update: Timing was off 180*. I forgot to make sure cylinder #1 was at btdc when aligning the timing marks. So I took off the cam gear when the crank pulley was at #1 btdc and moved the cam pulley to put it back in alignment. Still doesn't start though - the spark plugs are fouled so we will see what happens tonight.
