So heres my story. I bought my dsm off ebay without a head and some other smaller parts and have been piecing it back together, learning as I go as this is my first car. Now today I put in a new fuel pump and she finally started up. Such a good feeling :thumb:
But there was a bolt missing from the block and oil went shooting out everywhere. So I put in a bolt and now the engine is smoking, obviously from the spilled oil, but it is also coming out the tailpipe. Could this be bad rings? Another problem is the car idles at about 2k, which scared me enough to only reverse it a few feet until I know whats wrong. Also, on the back left corner of the head there is a spot that looks like the cas spot on non-95's that is very very slowly leaking oil. Is there some kind of plug that goes there?

Smoke could be from the rings or from crap in the combustion chamber from when you got it. Do a compression test on it. The idle could be numerous problems. Sounds like a big vacuum leak though. As far as the oil leaks, maybe find a picture of what you are trying to describe.

For the idle, you have to check for boost leaks, readjust the biss screw, verify the isc is good and make sure your ips is working properly. All those checks are on www.vfaq.com

If those don't fix the idle, you have another problem like a sticky throttle plate or a bad fiav.

If it's consistently blowing smoke even after car has run a couple times to operating temp. you have a problem. Either a bad pcv that leaks boost into the crankcase and blows oil into the cylinder, or a bad turbo, or bad rings (bad). A compression test will tell you if it's the rings or not.

These cars are old and prone to common problems that all dsm'ers have to encounter and solve. Read through the forums and you will see what I'm talking about. You have to make sure of things like secure battery terminals, good ECU capacitors (CHECK THEM!!!!), good sensors (get a datalogger off ebay or something), good connections and grounds, bad plugs/wires or leaky plug well gaskets etc. etc. Those are only a few.

For the cam angle sensor spot, you need a plug. I got mine from chrysler (mitsu couldnt get it). here is a forum i posted about that problem.

I just rebuilt my engine and had a high idle as well. I would recommend disconnecting the throttle cable to see if that is the problem (it was in mine). It only takes about 30 seconds to test.
