I've seen threads where people have argued that the 99 GSX's did AND did not have a standard limited slip rear differentials. Soon after purschasing my GSX I checked the passenger side door for a limited diff warning sticker... nothing. I jacked the car up and checked my diff case for a warning sticker... nothing. Since I found no stickers I simply assumed my car was equipped with a conventional differential. NOW... I've read yesterday in an old thread that 99 GSX's came standard with limited slip rear differential WITHOUT WARNING STICKERS.

Can any other 99 GSX owners confirm that this is true? Or false? Or anyone that knows for sure? I want to lift my car up and check but weather really sucks here in Michigan and my car's already stored away. What I plan on doing is checking my haynes and Mitsu manuals and verify what exact parts I have on the car. One thing that I am positive about when I had my car up in the air is when I spun one rear wheel in one direction, the other side spun in the opposite direction.

If it spun in the opposite direction, then it's not an lsd. I have a 1G, but right now in my car there's a same thing happening when I spin one wheel. But I recently got an lsd rear end (haven't put the in my car yet), before I took it out I spun one wheel, and the other one went the same direction, and besides it said LSD on it. Just my .2

I believe that ALL 99 GSXs came with LSD. I remember reading that a few times just before buying my 99 GSX. So yes, I believe we do have LSDs.

Hmm... when your back tires are off the ground, will they rotate together when you spin a wheel? I've read alot of reviews on the 1999 GSX and it states that a limited rear diff is standard equipment. If mines does not, would it have been possible that the original owner had the factory remove it to lower the cost???

If the wheels spin in the opposite direction you have an open differential. I have no idea whether it was standard or an option , but you have an open diff.

true, It is an option. :talon:

Man, it really sucks though because all the reviews done on the 1999 Eclipse GSX states that they came with limited rear diff as standard equipment. BTW guys, if I really wanted to do a swap, what years can I interchange parts with? I've did alot of reading on this and there seems to be so much mis-information on this topic. A link would be awesome. Thanks for all the help.

If the rear diff is an LSD unit, it will say so right on the back. I know that not all GSXs had them, but it's rare indeed to find one without the LSD!

Note that on my LSD equipped car, the opposite wheel turns the "wrong" way...

My car has an lsd and when i rotate one rear wheel, the other spins in the opposite direction too. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe if it does this, you have a busted viscous coupling.

I've been told everything from "that's how a viscous LSD is supposed to work" to "it's broken" :)

All I know is that it still works :)
Do your tires drag when you make tight, low speed turns?

Every open diff car I've had the wheels spin opposite. Every LSD car they've spun the same direction. It's also what I've always been told is the rule for checking.

The other way to check is to jack the car all the way off the ground, start it and put it in gear. If it's easy to stop one of the wheels with your hands you probably have an open diff.

For instance, if I do this to my car I can stop one of the front wheels easily, because the front is open diff. If I do it to the rear wheels they both continue to spin despite me applying pressure.

Now that really makes me wonder because mine does the same. During this next holiday break(Thanksgiving) I'm going to go under my car and check my car for lsd axles and non-lsd axles. Maybe it'll be easier for me to find out because I can not find one sticker on my car warning me about an lsd, not even in the door jam or on the case itself.

I'll verify if my car is LSD equipped or not. I'm kinda getting mixed messages on this subject so... I'm taking my Mitsu manual and compare the parts I have under my car and let ya know what I really got. Strange though... like 1LE said, or quoted... "that's how a viscous LSD is supposed to work" to "it's broken".

I don't think so. Shouldn't either way, it's a viscous, not a locker... About the only information I have to go on is reports from corner workers that I smoke all 4 coming out of some of the tight corners at the local auto-x. If the LSD is malfunctioning, the inside tire should spin, and the outside should not (I have a non-LSD RWD car too, and that's VERY obvious to outside observers when I hit the gas).

Note that I have Quaife front and center LSDs in addition to the stock rear, and the front end of the car does the same thing too. The Quaife's definitely work too. The car used to be horribly unstable launching in gravel. Now, since the diff upgrades, it goes in a MUCH straighter line.
