I put a used transmission into my car ( 1990 plymouth laser rs-t ). The transmission was said to be in perfect condition. When i installed it right away 1st was totally out, 3rd popped out of gear and 5th would grind and pop out when it wasn't put in gear perfectly. It is also really loud when i shift gears, not a grind but a noise of like parts moving around, maybe shift linkage.

Question: Is it possible that the shift linkage on the transmission is just set up wrong as in missing a washer somewhere? or Is the transmission just crap, or could it be that i need a different gear oil?

Moved to newbies section.

What year tranny is it? 90' or 91'+?

i know that i have a 2nd gen eclipse and you're talking about a 1990 but i had my trans. re-built twice because it was blown when i got the car and after i had it re-built, the person re-building it did something wrong....my symptoms at first were the grinding in a few gears like you said as well as it popping out of 4th gear.....as time went on, it wouldn't even go into 4th....the second time my transmission went, it would make a loud grinding/ sheering metal noise when i started the car and it wouldnt stay in second at all.....i would put it into second and it would stay in until about 3000 rpms and than it would jerk out of gear violently.....in my opinion, it sounds like that trans. you just got is pretty much in need of a re-build....hopefully its not something this big but if it is....good luck and let me know how everything works out
