I was curious to know if timing belts could stretch like timing chains. And if they do, do you lose any power?
 
No timing belts do not stretch, but they will snap about every 60k miles. It would be wise to always get a new timing belt at 60k or you will be playing with fire. You won't see an add in performance but you will have piece of mind.
 
Are they steel, or just aramid fibers? Anyway, no. Failure is usually at either the base of the teeth, or the bonding of the toothed layer between the belt layers. If you find a gnarled or broken belt, that is more than likely secondary damage after the teeth failed.
