Ok, so today i was messing around I pulled off my intake to check the compressor wheel for play, and there was. It seems like there is just a little too much than there should be. I have a 14b in my garage and there isnt as much play as there was on my e316g that I was messing around with. Ive read that there should be a little play and there should be no in and out play. Well the in and out is barely noticeable but I dony think that this is good at all. My question is, is there any way to fix this by replacing a seal in there or something, or is the turbo just shot? It seems to spool up fine and the turbo is farely new. Also, what makes this happen? Low oil or something?
-thanks

Yea, I agree with Talondude, a rebuild kit is a good way to start if you are mechanically inclined. If not, you can always swap to the 14b, depending how the condition of that turbo is, but by far the rebuild kit is the best way to go.

I'm really curious about the rebuild kits. Can you rebuild yourself just by taking it apart, replacing everything, and putting it back together? Do you have to rebalance? I've thought about doing this too.

Good part is you can put the 14b back on then rebuild the 16g. Machine shop will have to rebalance it though. My 14b started going bad with in and out play, started leaking coolent. I was going to rebuild it but 16g's are so cheap now it was almost the same price so I bought a 16g. Either way g/l.

wait, so how much would it cost to rebuild my turbo? Should i just swap the 14b on it now and not take chances with the evo, because it seems to work fine but i just want to be safe. The 14b seems to be in pretty good condition but the waste gate actuator arm has come off the part that it hooks into with the cotter key. The part that the arm hooks onto seems to be stuck and i cant move it back into place where i wouild be able to hook it onto the arm. This turob came off a car that supposedly ran good that was sittign in the junkyard. How do i get this thing unstuck. Take the turbo apart and hit it with some stuff that breaks up gunk?
-thanks for all your help

If your 14b is in good enough condition run that while you rebuild your 16g. I havent heard anything about the balance thing, so thats completely new to me, i never rebuilt one i just know that there are rebuild kits. I have turbo trouble as we speak so im in the same boat just i dont got a spare turbo to put in.

Rebuild kits I've seen for 100-200. How much is the average rebalance? I'm just trying to get an idea for the hidden costs, since I'd love to do a rebuild myself.

yeah but did u guys read abou what i said about my waste gate actautor arm not being able to fit on because the part it hooks onto seems to be stuck forward. How do i fix this?
-thanks

What you can actually do if you are not going to rebuild the EvoIII16g is use the exhaust housing from that. Just bolt the center section and compressor housing from the 14b to that.

If you are going to rebuild the EvoIII16g then take the exhaust housing off of the center section and to see what is binging up the wastegate flapper and arm. It may be rust or it may be a carbon type of build up, and if so, PB Blaster should work. If not something that actually pentrates well enough to get it in deep, should work just as good.

-To reseal the stuff that i un bolted, could i just use some regular rtv silicone, instead of having to buy gaskets?
