I currently put an engine in my 90 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST and am having major problems. I started it for the first time this past weekend and I had no problems. I was getting spark and the engine sounded good except for an oil leak from the banjo bolt holding the turbo feed line. I fixed this issue and put some of the car back together and now I can't even get the car to spark. On top of no spark, the starter runs as soon as I turn the ignition on and will not stop even when I remove the key. I have to unhook the battery or it will continue to turn over. I had none of these problems when I started it this weekend. The only thing I have done since then was remove the canister and some of the vacuum lines that I don't need. I printed a diagram of the needed vacuum lines from a dsmtuners thread. Are the starter and no spark issues related? What should I check for? Please offer any advice to help me get this car running finally.

I would check to make sure the 2 lines that go to the back of the starter are correct. One is a + voltage line (red) and the other should be the starter soleniod that triggers it (much smaller wire). The ground line goes to one of the bolts that bolt the starter to the transaxle.

It sounds to me like it could the be soleniod wire or a ground problem.

What about the no spark problem? The car is not firing. That has to be unrelated to my starter issues...right? I will check all of that tonight. I do not remember hooking up another wire to the starter than the big power wire that bolts onto the solenoid. Where in the harness does this wire come from? I think it may be missing because everything else on the car is hooked up. Please help some more.

Also, there is a plug on the back of the intake manifold that points up. It is right above the bracket that bolts the intake manifold the block itself. Does anybody know what this is? I do not have a plug that goes into it.

Starter is hooked up correctly. I removed it to make sure everything was fine on it and it was right. Both power wires are hooked up and so is the ground. As soon as I turn the key on, the starter starts turning over and won't stop until a 5-10 seconds after I pull the key out of the ignition. Also, I am getting no spark from the coil. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am still having the same problem. Does anybody have a wiring diagram easier to read for the starting system? I need a schematic for dummies and my Chilton's manual does not have that. It is a 90 Eclipse GST. The car's starter runs after you take the key out of the ignition and there is no spark to the plugs. I have replaced the starter and ignition. Somebody please help!

The starter part may be like a problem i had. I went and bought a new starter and put it on and the soleniod stuck on it. Pretty much exactly what u stated about yours. It was due to a faulty starter. You may want to take it off and take it to your parts store and have them check. You can check to see if it is the ignition switch by testing the heavy gauge black/yellow wire on the ignition harness under your dash. Turn your switch to try starting it and see if it has power when you let off it to. If it does it may be your switch which i doubt. And unhook your stater when you do this so it dont keep running

I am having this exact problem with my 1990 GSX. I tried 3 starters, different relays, traced wires and the starter still wants to keep running for 10 seconds after the key is out of the switch.

Did anyone ever figure out what was causing this problem?

Any help on this matter would be great.
Thanks

I am having the exact same issue with my eclipse as well. Did you ever find the solution to the problem?

The thread is 13 years old. It is one of the reasons that we ask to post the resolution to the problem when it is fixed. I own 90s, but have never had the problem described in the post.
