Hi,

I've got a little problem. I ordered DSMLINK and talked to them, that they also include the socket for the socketing in the package.
Now they forgot about that and they shipped it out without.

Can anyone who socketed the ecu by themselfs tell me, what socket I have to get, how it looks like (picture?) and is there maybe a name/description or even a number?

Thanks a lot

28 pin DIP socket is what is used on 1g's, I also added a zif socket on there for easy removal.
I do not know if 2g's have the same pin count, so just verify there's 28 pins on the stock chip.

I buy my stuff at:
Moates.net

Yeah that's the socket, I searched and found someone who said they used the same type of chips the 1g's used for his 2g.

I personally wouldn't care what someone online said, if it were me I'd take off the ecu cover and count the pins.

The socket used is the same for both ECUs. it's a 28pin .6" wide machine pin socket.

I prefer the open frame style but the one that Moates sells would be fine.

You'll also need a temp controlled soldering iron and a solder vacuum. The 2g ECU circuit board is very fragile and easy to crack the circuit traces to the EPROM. You don't want to overheat and crack one or burn the pads off. You also need to make sure all the pins are fully desoldered before trying to pull the EPROM. The plated through holes will rip right out of the board if you pry on the chip.

I've seen lots of carnage from people trying to socket their own ECUs over the years. These are some of the most common problems.

If you're going with DSM Link, and you're really concerned about money, just stick with the DIP socket. I'd only get a ZIF socket if I was getting Jeff's chips at Keydiver or burning my own. I get mine from Mouser. Get a gold, machine pin one. Those are the best.

a solder vaccum and a controllable soldering iron are ideal, if you're cheap, and you've had experience soldering before you can use a 30watt and get a $3 light dimmer from the hardware store, cut the plug off your soldering iron and run it through the light dimmer.. there's some decent control for cheap... and instead of a solder vacuum, you can use solder wick, it'll just suck up all the solder of the board into itself, not as good.. but it does suffice... if you have any doubts, take it somewhere to be done.

Don't skimp-out when you go to purchase a socket - you will want to select one which will hold up well under vibration, so that the EPROM stays firmly seated in its socket. Also, be careful when installing the EPROM into its socket that you do not bend any pins and also that you have the EPROM oriented correctly on the circuit board.

Hah, Don't be scared man! Just be gentle and take your time, a steady hand is all that's needed. I've been soldering since I was in elementary school, isn't much to it.
