Hey, Im replacing my clutch for the first time and Im having a little trouble. I have my wheel off, and all the necessary bolts off in order to move the axle back enough. My question is, Do I need to disconnect the cv boot first? When Im pulling on the axle I feel like Im going to rip the boot along with it? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just want to make as few mistakes as possible. Thanks-

your axles should slide right out. I 've ripped mine out a couple times and have never had a problem. Try twisting them back and forth while pulling.

No don't just pull on them. Use a crowbar and gentally slide it where the axle meets the tranny and pry apart, they should pop out cleanly without any damage to them. Don't want to just pull and twist and turn and hope for the best. You may damage the cv-joint

first off, are you working on the driver side? if so there are 2 shafts on that side, the intermediate shaft, which the axle is connected to, and yes it's connected by the boot to the intermediate shaft, I just changed my inner driver side CV boot today, and I had to cut what was left of a torn boot to remove the axle from the intermediate shaft.. as far as I know you can remove the intermediate shaft from the tranny with the axle attached to it if you don't want to rebuilt your axles.. - if this on the passenger side or just isn't what you're talking about then check the vfaq for instructions.

It just kind of pops out, using something for leverage is a good idea. There is a ring on the end that holds it in and you will feel it pop, once you get the first one it'll be easy.

The green part at the end of the CV is what you pry on. Just stick a prybar (or equivalent) between the tranny and here and pry away. It should pop out easily with an adequately sized prybar. I tried getting it out with large screwdriver, among other things, but the oil seal and c-clip really hold that sucker in there. If you dont have a nice set of prybars, this is a great excuse to go buy some. Tools purchases are aways justifiable.

Here is a pic of where I was talking about.

You DO NOT have to take apart the CV.

Dont forget to drain you tranny fluid first. If you dont, you will have a lake on your floor.

If you have any other questions or concerns, I will try and help.

If you are replacing the axles just rip those ####ers out, if you are keeping them do like the others said and try to pry them out, they will seem stuck due to the fluid seal. Kinda like a suction cup...Dont ever take the boot off-you might not ever get it back on.

Thanks a lot, this is all really new to me. I have done a ton of work on the engine but when it comes to the drivetrain I get nervous. :barf:

I will try the prybars and come back if and when I have any trouble with the rest of the removal. Thanks again.

u prob have them out by now but when i worked in a transmission shop we use to take a ball joint spliter(a metal 2 prong fork ------C)and put the axle between the forks and hit the shit out of it with a hammer.1 hit it pops the damn thing right out.2 secs worth of work.
