BIG PROBLEM READ THIRD POST

i just started up my talon for the first time in a year last night. built a new engine for it..etc

issues:

im concerned because its knocking hard. like really hard.. i pulled the oil cap to find out there isnt a whole lot of oil splashing around in there.. the oil pressure is above half way at a cold idle. (stock guage)
oil pressure drops to just below half way after it gets warm..
not to mention it gets warm quick! normal?
what are some things i should do to make sure the engine is healthy? im afraid to drive it far just yet.. what about breaking it in? 1500 miles? before what? i can floor it? how 'easy' should i be driving it..

thanks

What kind of oil are you using? Synthetic or reg. oil? On new set-ups you dont have to baby them, search "motoman break in" to give you a rough idea it is going 20 miles real hard on the engine, say in 3rd gear, accxelerate, then decel, then accel, ect...This seats the piston rings much quicker, then the 1500mile baby break in period. If you do the moto man break in change the oil at roughly 200 miles then again at 1500, at 1500 you can go to synthetic if you like, but you should be using reg. oil before that first 1500. How much oil did you add to the engine? It shouldnt warm up too quick, and dont go by the stock guage those things are so inacurrate, people have had dataloggers record temps, and the temps shoot hit, but the guage stays the same. Make sure your cooling system is up to par as well.

thanks for the reply.

i just ran into a problem, i let it sit and idle for a bit so i could check on leaks and what not. so i baby sat it for a while then went inside, came back out 5mins later to coolant spewing out of the overflow tank, a loud hissing noise and an overheated engine...

ugh what now.. i had to take a radiator fan out completely in order for the turbo stuff to fit, and i notice the one fan i have wasnt plugged in. would that cause this to happen? the coolant was boiling! you could hear it inside the engine.. so scary.. i hope i didnt screw up the engine... hasnt seen 20miles..

i used moble1 syn.. bad? should i drain it out and put regular crap in? why?

im thinking about plugging in the fan, and replacing the thermostat just incase.. refilling the coolant and trying it again... what would you suggest i do from here?

Get that synthetic out of it. Newly rebuilt motors need reg. oil.

Did you need to pull the fan just to instal then you hooked it back up? Or you dont have enough room to have the fan in, if this is the case, then get pusher style fans, they mount on the outside of the radiator, this will allow for plenty of room. After you hooked the coolant system back up to the engine and put fluid in it did you make sure all air pockets were out? This would cause coolant to be hot, and have a guage show hot temps. Do you have your stock lower and upper heat shields?

Yes plug the fan in, replace the thermostat, and drill 1-3 holes in the outter ring of it, Ill find a link explaining why in a sec, and throw an edit at the bottom of this page, replace the rad. cap if the gascket on the inside of it looks corroded, or worn, and fill the system up, leave the rad cap off, and run the car at idle, this will allow for any air pockets to be vented out of the system, everything an air pocket is"burped" from the system fill more fluid into it to go to the rim of the rad cap flanged piece(not sure what to call it, but its where the rad. cap is screwed onto)
EDIT: It took some looking so here it is>>>http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=239195, post #9 has a nice pic of what I am talking about, the holes should be 1/16-1/8" wide, the holes allow for a little more coolant to pass through the system. Also as an added note, go OEM, dfont do get some 12$ T-stat from autozone.

If the car is just sitting there and running without a radiator fan, there's no air moving over the radiator, so it's not going to cool very well.
