Hello all,

I just got finished searching through about 30 pages of posts to try to piece together information but i cant find an answer to the question that i'm looking for.

my Question is, what is a o2 Dump tube and what does it do? I've noticed that only a few cars have these so i'm guessing that its not needed..but if anybody has anymore info for me, it would be greatly appreciated...thank you...!

P.S i know how they look like so please dont send me a picture saying somethin like "this is a dump tubeROFL" lets be grown up about this and help a fellow DSM'er out :thumb:

An o2 sensor housing has 2 parts. One is for the turbo exhaust and the other is for the wastegate. An o2 dump tube vents that tube to atmosphere. If you use an external wastegate, you can either reroute the pipe from the wastegate to atmosphere for dump it to atmosphere.

It is highly illegal to dump an o2 because you are venting exhaust gasses out of the car. It is just like using a test pipe instead of a cat. If you live in CA, I would probably not do an o2 dump. It is also very loud and sounds like a big exhaust leak. Do a search for o2 dump video and you'll find some clips.

i guess i should search word for word...i just typed "o2 dump tube" and "how does o2 dump tube work"

So from what i take it from the replies here and also that other page, i take it as its pretty much a short route exhaust system..? I'm sorry if i come as noob-ish...i've just never heard of these things until i got my DSM...and even when i had my FIRST DSM i STILL never heard about it, LOL..!

Lol...you know Andy, alot of people tell me that as soon as they put up a question you ALWAYS have the correct answer..thank you for that...

and dont feel left out DGajre...you gets love too..! thank you once again

I didnt / don't wanna get one because i didnt know what it was and what did it do, LOL..! I'm going for a sleeper look so i'd imagine running a freekin' o2 dump that makes my eclipse sound like a Deuce and a Quarter...yea, there goes that stealth tactic

Here's a little drawing I just made. Hopefully it helps you guys that are visual learners like me...

Edit: my slow drawing skills gave away the first post to Andy... Blast! He's beaten me again!

eklypse: Thanks for the compliment, but I can't take all of the credit. I was taught by some very smart people and we have tons of competent users on the site.

Derek: I may type faster, but your drawings are the shit!

Off topic but slightly related:

As a general FYI, in addition to O2 mounted dump tubes, there are also manifold mounted external wastegates. For the new users out there, external gates mount either to the exhaust manifold on runner number one or onto the O2 housing, and contain a spring which regulates boost levels without a boost controller. These too can be externally dumped with a straight pipe under the car, although many users such as myself prefer to route them back into the downpipe since we can't stand the noise.

The benefit to an external is that it also helps eliminate boost creep and is more proficient at holding steady boost than an internal wastegate. Having recently switched to one, I'll never run an internal gate again. Anwyay, if you check the picture below (which is my pal Dan's motor) you'll see the external gate mounted on the driver's side of the motor peeking out from the front of the heat shield and black dump tube that runs underneath the motor. Please excuse the mess since Dan's motor is nowhere as clean as mine (I'll get some major crap for that I'm sure)

Enjoy!

Come on Andy, you cant say its not funny scaring the shit out of people on the street when your WG dumps to the atmosphere. I get a kick out of it so much on my buddy Dave's, that the noise doesn't bother me...its music to my ears.

I hated it. The motor sounded like a damn tractor with an exhaust leak. I was much happier when I plumbed the wastagate back into the downpipe. Besides the police around here are pretty tough on that stuff and I'm already a target in this car.

^^ WTF Looks like viagra commercial ROFL

As for the dumping, my old internally gated 16G w/O2 Dump sounded like complete ass, and since the OEM WG never seals 100%, always sounded (smelled) like an exhaust leak :barf:

With the Tial44 and dumping off the O2, it now sounds more like a jet taking off than an exhaust leak :D

Yea its not the nicest sounding thing in the world. But it serves its purpose. I just don't understand why everyone makes it sound like the thing is blasting all the time. If you're running 15+psi you can go around town all day long (even on boost) without ever hearing it.

If you set it up right it sounds so good. When you hear the external kick in, in a race you no your screwed cause that car is gone LOL. Well thats how it is with my buddys. sadley enough im not at that stage yet.
