I'm just wondering if it's possible to just get rid of the water cooled oil cooler housing, and not run a cooler..I just picked up a 92 Laser AWD, and the cooler housing backed off on the guy, and trashed the head, and i'm in the process of rebuilding a stock motor. I'd hate to have this happen again, and i've seen many go with the external oil cooler setup. I would do that, but how important is this to have? I have a boosted 420A(350HP), and no oil cooling what so-ever, and its been fine at 30k miles so far..If i can rid the oil cooling setup, can I just use a oil filter housing from a 1G NT??? Any difference in the pressure relief plunger/spring? I want to keep things as simple as possible, and "reliable" as possible as well. There are many turbo cars out there with no oil cooling, so what do you guys think? Thanks for any input.

My suggestion would to just run the air cooled oil cooler off the '90s. But in awnser to your question i guess you could not run it but, it would be safer to run one though

A lot of people will say you need it but I dont agree. I have a front facing oil bracket and no cooler. Have no problem at all. Many other people I know do the same and one is on a 550whp car.

Yeah, i fully understand an oil cooler will always be the "best" way to go, I guess I was just wondering how many dont run one, and what they used instead. As for longevity of the engine, i'm not too concerned with, as I will be builing up a race block in the next year or two. I just need something to get by with until then. So if i use a housing from a 1 NT, nothing will be different about it, like the oil pressure control system? Oil pressure sensors/locations? Thanks guys.

I also run a big ass external oil cooler and wouldn't run w/out it. I've got too much damn time and money into this car for it to burn up from hot oil. Just my opinion. But anyways, IMO run a 90 oil filter housing w/ the external cooler.

It took 15 years for the bolt to back out on my car. I replaced the seal, cleaned the housing and bolt to reinstall it with some locktite and I should be as good as new.

Our cars run hot to begin with, I'd hate to run it without any oil cooler.

I bought it from a friend that works at a local performance warehouse. PM Paul, 99gst_racer if you'd like to inquire on price, etc. I forget the size, but I think its 11x8x1.5 or something close to that. I ran -8an pushlock lines with it.

I would recommend a oil cooler; our cars come with them stock, I suspect its for more then one reason. I would believe it will prolong the life of the oil as well as the life of the turbo seeing that its temps get high. Those that dont have turbo timers a cooler may do some good in a turbo cool down. We have a big junk yard were I stay so my target was a v8 oil cooler that will last. Got one of an old 350 suburban, they dont make coolers like this any more. Mounted it on passenger side that way when cooling fan kicks on it will cool the cooler as well.

hey buddy. this thread is over 2 years old... The Zombies Return!

But....
I had an water cooled oil cooler (A.K.A Oil Mixer) pop on me and fill the coolant system with mud... Lesson Learned, I wont run one again. External cooler FTW
