Does a N/T iginition coil work in a turbo?

Thanks steve. Was going to hit the junk yard to find one today and wanted to make sure. Coil died and I had to run on 3 cylinders to make it home and I was 60 miles from home. How much damage do you cause by driving it on 3 cylinders?

I don't think 60 miles will do too much damage, if any, some new v-8s to save gas sometimes run on 4 cylinders at crusing speed... So I don't think it will hurt anything.

Steve doenst know?????? That has to be a first. Just Joking. Those new hemi v-8's are built to run like that. My car is not so I dont think it would be ok. All that fuel not burning in that piston and pushing through the exhaust. Most likely burning in my cat. Hope my brand new motor is still ok.

Thanks man, good reply. I will change the oil. I drove it for about 40 miles actually all the way home down a mountain pass. That makes a lot of sense about the oil being washed off the walls. I hope my motor is ok.

To the OP, The non-turbo 4G63 (1G) coils will work, they are the same coil. FYI: Not any will work. If you have a '90 there is a sqaure plug that wire into it, if it is a 91+ it is a triangle plug that plugs into it. This also follows suit with the brackets, the only exeption to this I know is a JDM Cyclone motor that it is a 90, they have the triangle plug. Anyway, if your coil has a triangle plug and you go to the junkyard and get one with a triangle plug, the bracket should be the same. Same goes for the sqaure plug.

Why didn't you just coast with the engine off?

Because the pass is up and down the whole way. could not just coast its not all downhill like you would think. Also when my car is off, the brakes barely work, i have to hit them as hard as i can to make them work at all. And thats scarey on a mountain pass with cliffs all around you.

Please don't confuse the coil with the coil pack. There's more than just the wiring that's different between the 90 and 91+ coil packs but as far as I know the actual coils across the DOHC engines are the same so he could unbolt the bad one and bolt up a replacement. Or he could swap the whole coil pack if he keeps the 90 vs 91+ in mind.
