Hi I Need To Replace My Clutch As Something Is Wrong. I Am Wondering If It Makes It More Likely To Get Crankwalk If I Get Like A Stage 3 Or Somehting Clutch? I Read Somewhere That A Heavy Duty Pressure Plate Makes The Odds Better To Get Crankwalk. Is This True? Since I Need To Replace It I Want To Get Something Prety Decent, I Have Some Really Light And High Release Clutch Right Now That I Dont Like At All. \

How Are The Ones For Sale On Ebay For Like Around 150 Or So? Are They Rip Offs Most Likely Or What? What Would Be The Best One To Get For Around 150 To 200? Any Ideas? I Want One That Has A Little Play A Not So High Release Point And Not Too Floppy Of A Peddle. If Anyone Has Any Ideas Please Let Me Know.

The Most Important Is Just Knowing If It Will Be More Crankwalk Prone With A Heavy Duty Racing Clutch Or Somehting? I Plan To Make Close To 400 Hp.

Thanks --ryan.

Ryan,

Running a heavier duty pressure plate is thought to increase the chances of crankwalk, because with the clutch disengaged, the crankshaft is providing the opposing force to the pressure plate spring. Typically FWD cars can get away with lighter duty clutches than AWD, because the launches tend to place less wear on them. I have an ACT 2100 that has worked fine for me for about a year now. If you plan on doing a lot of racing, however, I would probably recommend something stiffer. The CFDF clutches allegedly obtain more clamping force while placing less load on the crankshaft, if you want to check those out. In my opinion, if you have an average amount of mileage on your car for a '96 and it hasn't crankwalked yet, it probably isn't going to.

Hope that helps.

How many miles are on your car? If crankwalk hasn't happened by like 80-100k, it most likely will not happen. eBay stuff is 9 times out of 10 cheap knock off stuff. Some of it's ok, but nothing you really rely on. I would not buy an eBay clutch. For your goals, I'd probably get an ACT 2600 or a Slowboy Racing 3500. Here's links...

ACT 2600 w/ Street Disk
SBR 3500

Double edit: Don must be Andy's padawan... Always beatin me.

The crankwalk issue you are talking about deals only with the pressure plate. A heavier pressure plate will aggravate the design problems with the cranks.

I Am Not Looking To Really Be Doing Much Or Any Racing. I Just Want To Be Able To Get Going Real Nice When I Want To. And I Figure If I Am Taking The Tranny Off And All I Should Upgrade My Clutch To Handle More Power Than The One I Have On It. I Am Planning On Getting An Evo3 Big 16g Turbo. What Clutch Would Be Good To Go With That? Cause I Dont Know What Sort Of Power I Will Get Out Of One Of Those With A Few Supporting Mods? Any Ideas? Is There Any Clutch In The 200 Dollar Range That Would Be Good To Get? Dont Have The Money Right Now For A $500 One.

Also My Car Does Have A Good Amount Of Mileage So Hope That Is Am Out Of Crankwalks Harms Way Lol. Ok Well Let Me Know If Any More Info.

Yes, 2100 is a great street clutch. It just can't handle a lot of launches and slipping. Get the 2600 for that. 2100 has a stock feel, and can hold more than stock. My left leg is about 3 times as big as my right due to my 2600 ROFL

Sexy :sneaky:

donmagicjuan have you got a time slip yet? that is the set up i am looking to get prety much give or take a few things. was just wondering what type of numbers that setup is going to put out? if you havent tested it what do you think the approximate 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are? new to dsm's so looking to see what sort of performance i am going to get out of it. let me know if you can. thanks. --ryan.

ROFL I'll be taking it to the track as soon as I get it running again! I'm in the process of installing a GM MAF, and I ran into a slight hangup. As soon as I get a slip I'll post it. For now, you'll just have to settle for my dyno numbers. I'm not going to venture to guess what my ET will be, because I don't very much like the taste of my own foot. Let's just say there are a couple guys on here with FWD that have obtained 12s on a similar setup.

He has taught me well...

I didn't teach Don a damn thing, except to be fast. Looking at his HP ratings, I think he does that pretty well. Now the typing speed has definitely improved!

On topic, I agree that a 2100 is fine for an FWD, but it's the launches that kills them. I actually have a 2100 on a 2.3 stroker/50 trim combo but mine still works without slipping because of the low timing I run and the linear nature of the 50 trim in general. A 20G and more timing would have eaten this clutch by now.

Now I'm not impressed anymore because I NEVER use quick reply. Let the force grow within you my young padawan and learn to type even faster!

On a serious note, good luck at the track. I'm predicting a decent ET with some sweet top end. Let us know what she does wrong wheel driven one.

Does anyone know anything about this clutch? Seems to be decent for the price, and i have read a few posts here and poeple said that some of the ebay clutch's are prety good actually. Let me know if anyone has any experience with them.

These are the ones i am talking about:

Let me know how you think these would be and which would be better. It wont be a permanent clutch (unless i grow to like it alot) but just for a while and to be able to handle some mods and a new turbo but without going too crazy with power.

Ok i am going to go with the act 2100 i beleive, does that work well with a fidanza light weight flywheel? I am having my clutch done this weekend or next and gonna get a flywheel too i think as well as clutch fork and pivot ball. Anything else i should get as well while changing the clutch? How hard is it to install an sbr lsd insert? The place i am getting my clutch done said it would be 200 since the tranny is out already. Is that a good price?

I agree with the 2100. I have a 2600 (mines awd and I love to launch) and I think it's great. Stay away from puck clutches. They are way too grabby and intended for track cars. Also, I would go ahead and get a SS clutch line. It's only $25 and should not cost much too install while everything is taken apart. $200 isn't bad for the insert, I have a friend who had Buschur racing install one for around the same price.

Ok sounds good, i'll go ahead and get the ss clutch line then. So the act 2100 comes in a non 6 puck form right? I think i saw a couple different versions of it, is that right?

Also anyone have any input in weather or not a fadanza lightweight flywheel would be a good combination for a dd? I dont want to have to worry about it stalling out on me and such. I have heard that but dont know how realistic it is.

no matter what route you go don't buy a POS clutch. Think about what it will cost to replace in just labor alone to save a little bit now. invest in a quality clutch now and don't worry about it after that.

My recommendation.....
-spec stage 2, competition clutch stage 2 or act 2100.

being FWD you DO NOT want a 6 puck clutch. You need something full face with a smooth pressure plate. make sure to resurface your flywheel and you are all set.

best of luck to you bro.

I already decided to go with a 2100 stated in my last post and i dont want to resurface my flywheel, thinking i should go with a new fadanza flywheel. But want to find out if it is a good match up with the act 2100 before i buy it. want to buy it tomorrow so hope i can get a response on that as soon as possible. Was originally thinking of going with a cheap no name clutch but got a good loan from a bank instead so now i can buy all top quality parts!

Forgot to add to this post. I did get everything installed and turned out great. In case people are in the same situation as me i thought i would say how much i love my setup. I decided to go with the ACT 2100 clutch and i also went with the ACT street light flywheel. I hardly have any performance mods at the time but the clutch holds very well, and have not had any slipping whatsoever. If anyone is looking for a good street set up i would highly recommend going with the ACT setup!! I did notice a little clutch chatter upon starting it up in the beginning. After i let it break in for about 500 miles, it seemed to go away for the most part. Only a little sometime when down shifting to 2nd gear at low rpm's. I believe this is due more to the install that from the clutch, but have also read that these clutches can have a little chatter occassionally.

i am lookin to upgrade my clutch as well and this thread helped alot with my choice, great thread guys. o and how much did you pay for the installation all together for the clutch and flywheel?

Clutch install is around 375 I believe if I am remember correctly. Flywheel shouldn't be anything extra.
