Hey guys. I am deciding what I want to do for logging equipment for my 92 TSi FWD.

I am working on a mods list right now, but I have a built 2.1, SMIM, Cams, FMIC, S-AFC, 660CC's, AFPR, Boost/EGT/AFR/FP Guages and im running a big16. I basically want to get this thing running as well as possible, and then later upgrade the turbo. This is my basic understanding...

PocketLogger (data logger) - this is a tool just to see what your car is doing. Reads things like RPM, coolant temp, 02, timing...not sure what else.

DSMLink - From what I understand this can do everything the PocketLogger and SAFC do but you can also adjust these things.

AEM EMS or other standalone - Have seen it used on numerous occasions. Is a large investment and one which takes a lot of time. Not exactly something I think I need yet.

Help me understand all this so I can figure out what I need..

Wow..looks pretty crazy and I have more reading to do..

So out comes the S-AFC is you have DSM link im guessing?

So I need to get an EPROM ECU? How do I know if mine is EPROM or not? If not, will any year do? Let me know..

With increased tuning ability comes the need for knowledge. AFC can't do much but doesn't take much. EMS can do it all, but you have to know what you are doing or you can really mess things up. DSMlink is right between; probably your best bet, it is for 95% of the people who find an AFC isn't enough.

Search and you will find your answers to the EPROM stuff.

Here is a link to help you figure out if you have an Eprom ECU or not. Sometimes you can tell just by the part number on the sticker of the ECU; but to be sure you can open the casing and look to see if it has the actual Eprom chip. If it does, you're all set for DSMLink.

If you want, you can keep the AFC in the car as an in-car monitoring device, but leave all the settings zero'd out and just use DSMLink as the main tuning tool. If you use both at the same time, you may end up canceling out any adjustments you made, OR you could multiply some adjustments you've made. You can see how either one would be a bad situation.

The best thing to do is to download the DSMLink user's manual. It's a free download and covers almost everything you need to know about how it works, what it can do (and it can do a lot, let me tell you) and how to get started. The download page is here. 1g cars get a few benefits in the program that only apply to 1g cars but not some benefits that apply to 2g cars. There is a list on the home page of what these features are.

Great, i will check my ECU today and definately download the manual. I understand the difference between DSMlink and AEM, and I just dont think I have a need for EMS yet...However, i sure do need more than an AFC and some guages! Thanks guys

Well i pulled the ECU out and it looks like this beast has eprom :)

I will hopefully be getting DSMlink with my next paycheck
