Well I just noticed today a pinging sound coming from the side of the car during deceleration. I stopped and reved the engine and noticed a sound similar to a radiator fan hitting a shroud, like a ping ...ping ping coming from the air filter area. I hope this isnt my turbo slapping the housing.....could it be anything else?? The ball in the mbc wiggling around? Maybe something loose in the bov??? This b16g has like 1000 miles on it!!!

It wouldn't by any chance happen to be the Evo3 GT turbo listed in your profile, would it?

Take off the intake, try to wiggle the compressor wheel up and down, side to side, and in and out. Any in and out play is bad. Side to side/up and down play should be barely noticeably. Look at the compressor fins to see if any are bent, chipped, or otherwise damaged. Look for tell-tale scratch marks on the inlet of the compressor housing that will indicate that the compressor wheel is scraping.

yes it is the e3 gt, I guess I will pull the intake off tomarrow and check the play, I hope its not what I think it is....the turbo has a 1 year warrenty but still, also wouldnt bad side to side play start to tear up the oil seals and burn oil? because im not burnin any oil....

In that case, I recommend keeping in touch with whomever you bought it from, checking the turbo for shaft play on a regular basis (once every two to three weeks shouldn't be too much to ask), and if it fails, document what conditions the turbo was in when it failed, how many miles you had put on it, how long it was on the car, etc., and make a thread or product review thread on it so that others can see your results.

If you keep an eye on the shaft play, you may be warned in advance of the turbo failing on you and you'll be able to plan ahead on what you need to do to keep your car running, i.e. buying a replacement/temporary turbo, second daily-driver car, etc.

If the shaft play is bad enough, yes, it will wear away at the seals and bearings. Check your lower intercooler pipe for oil. Still, if you show signs of shaft play, but there's no oil leakage, I'm sure that's not far behind.

It's not unheard of. Thus the warnings you see in threads cautioning people about the Evo3 GT. There was one tale of a person making a trip around the block after installing the turbo and seeing shaft play and oil leakage immediately after.

Check the turbo to see if it's really that or something else.

welp ill check it tomarrow and if it is bad Ill put the 14b back in, take pics, send the 16g off to be rebuilt. And make a report about this turbo and its failure. Lets hope for the best :thumb:

ok I checked the shaft play today and up-down and side-side was fine but in and out showed like .4 mm of total movement. When I pulled the shaft outward and turned it you could hear that it was scraping against the housing, does oil pressure hold this shaft where it is supposed to be (maybe low oil pressure) or is this turbo blown?? Also the turbo spools perfect, sounds great, and I burn no oil. The only thing is the shuttering sound on deceleration. Thanks

Oil pressure holds it side to side. This is the normal kind. In and out is the bad kind. Turbo is gone. And if it doesn't burn oil yet, it will. The shaft, when thrown out of balance, spins and continues getting worse and worse until your turbo doesn't work at all.

^^^ Exactly right.

Good thing that GT has a 1 year warranty, huh? Hopefully the vendor you bought it from honors it.

Where you get the turbo from? Because $350 shipped is way to cheap you sure its not one of those cheap ebay ones? Whats the best deal right now for the 16g i saw this dsmpart website forgot the url it was the 16g, manifold, and install kit for like $6 bills or something does anyone have the link for it?

got it from "jdmmotorz" the seller will honor it but I have to pay for the shipping, the turbo looks axactly like a e316g but it has a shinier, fake looking paint job and has a metal tag instead of a stamped serial number. The bad part is that I have to port the new turbo all over again, and I honestly would rather have my money back because I dont even wanna put this piece of junk back in my car

come to think of it ive been through quite a few turbos, is it possible I have an oil issue??

I have 80-100 psi cold

35-60 psi hot cruising

15-25 psi hot idle

I went on ebay and checked out what kind of EVO 3 16g the seller is offering. I found out its the super knock off. It is not even an EVO 3 GT thus not saying it on the compressor housing. At least the turbochargers.com EVO3 GT has been tested in the lab unlike the ebay ones. I hope he does honor that warranty. Here is some advice people, Do not buy 16g wannabe turbos from ebay. Unless it is the real MHI or even the EVO 3 GT.

Car parts are one of those things where you get what you pay for in most cases...
A turbo is not something to skimp and go cheap on...

I have heard this similar problem before with the same kind of super knock of evo turbo. This guys turbo lasted about 1000 miles before it took a dump. At least get the EVOIII GT from turbochargers.com, you would be surprised its actually a good quality turbo, but nothing beats MHI.

wow thats really pi$$es me off people whould be aware of the turbo that I bought, I cant believe this. The title even said evo III big 16g turbo, I found out immediatly that it wasnt an evo III but now its not even an evo GT?? Isnt that some sort of false advertisement??? GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are quite a few threads regarding the Evo3 GT turbo, as well as the ebay knock-off. It's my belief, and I could be wrong, that the ebay knock-off (the polished one that doesn't even have lettering on it) is merely a GT turbo that has had all the lettering polished off it. There are subtle differences, though. The GT turbo has a kinked wastegate actuator arm and a flat WG flapper arm. The ebay model has a round WG flapper arm and and an adjustable wastegate actuator arm.

As many have said before, if the makers/vendors hadn't decided to name this turbo an "Evo3 GT 16g", there wouldn't be so much confusion/scamming going on. If the makers/vendors had instead titled it something not related to the turbo it was based off of, such as calling it a "Spoolinator GT3000"* people who are looking for a true Evo3 turbo wouldn't have to wade through all the imitation crap that has sprung up. But it's always caveat emptor, regardless.

*I thought of that name first, so don't even think of taking it... in case I come up with a turbo design someday. :p
