isn't that too expensive?

Hi, I want to change these parts:

Mitsubishi OEM Water Pump 130$

Timing belt kit $220
mitsu. timing belt, tensioner pulley, idler pulley and tensioner.

balance shaft belt optional for $25.00
balance belt tensioner pully option for $35.00
upgrade timing belt to kevlar timing belt $100.00

So cheapest would be $350
and most expensive would be $510

Don't you think this is a little bit to expesive?
Which of these things do I really need? (mounting my EVOIII,..., so I will do that in the same time....)

Thanks

Mike

You need all of them except for the Kevlar timing belt option. I would never skimp on timing components.

As far as the cost factor, shop around with different vendors that sell OEM parts and see what the best deal is.

Of the above, many people will say you don't need to use a timing belt made of kevlar. That is an area where you could cut your expenses. The other items are generally a good idea to replace while you're in there. Your oil pump may need replacing soon too, consider whether it's worth it to you to do so while you're in there.

Why whould you skimp on the Kevlar timing belt? Isn't that one of the most important parts? If something does go haywire, i'd rather have a nice belt that would RESIST breaking as much as possible. And even if something gets inside the belt cover...

I've never used it before, just trying to pick your brain.

While you're in there replace the 5 seals also. They're cheap, about a $30 adder, and having to go back in because you "went cheap" would suck.

Cam seals - 2
Crank seal
Oil pump seal
Balance shaft seal

Also when you take it off check the condition of the crank pulley.

And I also agree, unless your car is running well past the 7500 factory rev limit, save the $100 adder on the kevlar belt and stick with OEM. You can put the money toward the seals and still have change left over for something else....like your GF after she sees the bill.

$3-400 is about right for everything dependant on where you buy it.

Check these guys out, they have great prices:

Yes, you can order them at your dealer but be prepared to pay big money for them. I had good luck with mitsupartsdirect.com just bought new belt, tensioner, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, bs kit, oil pump case gasket set, oem metal exhaust gasket and 4 turbo bolts for $238.96 shipped to my door.

Wow, that's cheap. About how much do you think it would cost to install all of those parts?

If you plan on getting any good amount of power go with kevlar timing belt then you dont have to worry about jacking up your timing

In my opinion, you don't need an OEM water pump. At 55K miles I had mine replaced with a GMB that cost about $50. It worked fine for the next 55-60K miles. A few months ago I used an ITM water pump that cost around $45. As long as you get one with a metal impeller you should be fine.

So would we. Unfortunately, no one seems to make a kevlar belt for the front balance shaft, so you're going to have to go in there in another 60K anyhow (unless you're a gambler).
And even if something gets inside the belt cover...
In the event of which, the Kevlar would skip teeth instead of breaking. Same damage.

Sorry, it was $238. I edited my post above, just letting you know that it was $238.96, not $138.96. My Bad.
