I have a 90 awd talon (5 speed), putting in a 91 awd tranny. I have the 91 tranny, t-case, and complete shifter unit minus the cables. I hear I can use my old cables but Im confused what years bracket and lever I need, and which shifter is the best to use with what combination of parts? Sorry, first dsm and Im already neck deep.

With a 91 tranny, the best bet is to use the shifter, cables, brackets, and shifter from a 91. With a 90 tranny, you can use all 91^ parts but you would have redrill and install a stud in the shift arm on the tranny to coincide with a 91 tranny. This is not possible to do using the 90 tranny because the shift arm is shorter and the only way to get the geometry correct is to weld an extension on the shift arm to match the the 91^ counter part.

In short, you need all the 91 parts to make istallation a breeze. Without them, you will end up spending a lot of time in labor to get the odd parts to work together.

Thanks a lot, when you said "shifter" twice, did you mean shift lever? I heard that its a pain to get off. basically everything from the 91 except for cables?

You need the cables!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It will make the installation much much easier, plug and play if you will. Grab everything from the tranny back. This means cables and the shifter assy. Ive tried it with the drilled lever and it didnt work out to well. Do yourself a favor and get the cables too.

im going to be puttin a 90 tranny on my 93 dsm, I thought all you have to do is use the shifter bracket from the original tranny that came with the car, which will match the shifter cabels? ( I believe wiseman oldman told me this )

The easilest thing for you is to

1. Swap in the 90' select bracket (the one that moves left and right on your shifter).

2. Drill a hole in the 91' control bracket (the one that is roll pined on the shaft which goes into the tranny) at 6.5 cm from the pivot point (center of the shaft) and put a bolt through it to secure the shifter bushing. In other words, the only difference between the 90' and 91'+ control lever is that the 90' is 6.5 cm long and 91'+ is 8 cm long.

Or you can do #1 and

2. Punch out both roll pins holding the control lever on both trannies using an air hammer (from rear to the front of the car) and swap the levers. Warning: Do not try to hammer it using regular hammer, you will most likely bent the shaft. You also might have trouble punching out the roll pins on older trannies even with an air hammer. I was able to punch out the roll pin on a 1 year old TRE tranny but had no luck with my 90' tranny, ended up buying a new 90' control bracket and roll pined it to the TRE tranny.

Or you can do what 92awddsm suggested but make sure you change everything from your shifter to the shifter cable mounting bracket to the tranny, keep both the select and control bracket from the 91'+ tranny.

Hope this wasn't too confusing.

That is possible i believe but in the long run and for your tansmissions sake it is easier to just get the cables and the shifter assy. I got mine from the boneyard for like 10bucks. It is a royal pita to remove the shift levers from the tranny.

Going from 90' tranny into a 91+ car is much easier, the shorter control bracket on the 90' tranny acts as a short shifter when used with 91'+ shifter assembly (All TRE 1G trannies comes with 90' control bracket) so all you have to do is swap the select bracket.

I agree that if you have access to 91'+ shifter assembly for cheap, most wants more than $10, it would be easier to just swap that in but if the above options are done right, it will not make a difference to the tranny itself. I myself did not have this option because the supposed 10k miles 1G TRE (new) tranny I bought off a tuner member (who has a 93' and was having problem getting into reverse since day 1 which I thought was probably due to improper bleeding until I try to install the tranny myself) came with a 95'+ control bracket  . I verified with Jon @ TRE that the invoice reflects a 1G tranny and he had no clue how a 95'+ bracket ended up on it. I suspect that since all new 1G TRE trannies starts with a new 2G tranny, they probably forgot to switch brackets before shipping. Poor Mark (sweet97) was having problem shifting for a year and didn't know why. My only options were to pull the tranny again to be sent to TRE or swap brackets.
