hey this is a simple IC i have been trying to find... has anyone heard of or seen a top mount for a dsm, i know the hood would have to be custom... but i think it would be a lot more effective than the SM or FM...
thanks

No room amigo, and you ever notice how everyone switches from a top mount to a front mount?

A top-mount would NOT be more effective. Top-mounted intercoolers are above the engine...heat rises. One of the best mods you can do to an FC3S is upgrade from the stock top-mount to a good front-mount. Don't do it! If you want maximum efficiency and you have the cash...go with a V-mount. It would have to be custom and you would have to make room. Chech out this super fly V-mount for the FD3S from Knight Sports.

The radiator and intercooler are mounted at an angle so that they come together at the back which forces the traped air through both...very very efficient...very very expencive. Rotary Extreme also makes a few designs like the one below.

Good luck...you would be the first DSM owner to do it.:thumb:

Go with a Big front mount, in the end you'll be alot happier. And you can take the extra cash you would have used to make a custom hood and what not and buy a nice big turbo. :)

No it would not be more efficient a fmic is way more efficient, because of the under hoods temps wouldn't help cool the tmic as good as a fmic. Go with a big fmic and you won't be disaappointed:thumb: :thumb:

Hope this helps, stay boostin

thanks guys, i just didnt know b/c the hood i was making was going to have a scoop in it, and i figured that is subaru thought it was a good idea... that it would be. i just want to keep my car tame and still have a stock look to it, stock looking if you dont know dsm like most ppl in this area... i think im going to have to try the FM after hearing what you guys are saying...
thanks

Wade,

Depending on what turbo you buy, a DejonTool sidemount will work beautifully on 16G variants (EVO III's and 50 trims would need water injection) and give you that element of stealth and a stock look. You'll need to hunt around and see if you can find a used one since the new one's are a bit pricey (almost as much as an FMIC). I've been running one for the last 6 months and have been very happy with it.

Go drive your car for about 20 minutes, then pop the hood and touch your valve cover. A bit warm isn't it? :)

NO way! When I had my 02 WRX, I used to have a temp reading what the intercooler's temp was. When you sat for any amount of time, that thing got just as hot as the valvecover. It was hot to touch. Granted it cooled off dramatically after spirited driving but it is not close at all with an upgraded sidemount, or even a fmic.

Do not quote me but the temps I used to see(just the outside of the top mount) was WELL over 130*. After driving, it made a difference. But like others said, heat rises and just think how hot your VC is!

Only until you get onto the cover of Modified Mag for having the only V-mount equiped DSM in the universe. Then people will want to sponsor you and your V-mount empire will begin...Hahahahahaaaaaa! <---(Evil Laugh)

If I remember right, the radiator on an FD3S is mounted at an angle from the factory. It was one of the weird things we noticed about my friend Tyler's RX7.

It might be mounted at a slight angle but to do the V-mount set up it has to be layed back even more. I wanted an FD for the longest time and the only reason I have my GSX is because I couldn't find one in Colorado that I could finance. I researched all the cool stuff for the FD. I love my GSX but if I had the chance to trade it for a 95' RX-7 in really good condition I would more than likely do it. One of the GRIP videos that I had showed how one company in Japan made a custome V-mount set-up for an FD and all of the custom fabrication that went into making the radiator brackets and everything else. SICK!!!
