Anyone have pics of where the starter is? [Merged 12-7] location

I don't have pictures, but I can tell you exactly where it is. If you look behind the motor, closest towards the fire wall, right in front/above the transmission is your starter. Atleast that's how it is on any 1g that I've worked on. :coy:

Hope that helped out any.

BTW, there are most likely two bolts that hold it on, if your looking to take it out and switch it.

When you turn the key to "start" do you get any noise from the starter at all? If no, check if you have +12V on the black/yellow wire at the starter (you can disconnect it to check if need be). If you can't get at it, try the other end which is the black/yellow wire at the starter relay (which is behind the radio - one on right). If no volts, try swapping out the relay (the relay actually makes the circuit when it is NOT activated - the black/red is connected to the black/yellow inside the relay unless it's activated).

you should take it out and taket it to napa or another parts store so they can test it for you.
mine took a crap a few weeks ago, all i heard was one click when id go to start it. i took it in to test it and it turned fine but the little gear in the starter didnt come out to engauge the flywheel.

I have looked and looked but I can't seem to find where the starter location is on 4g63t. Any help out there? I am completley lost. The 1996 Eaglle Talon TSI will not turn over. The battery tests out okay, the alternator tests out okay, so maybe the starter? But where is it located in this car? Help Please?

If you remove your upper intercooler piping, you can see it. Its right below your intake manifold.

If it will crank and not turn over, check the basics - spark, fuel, and compression.

Welcome to Tuners.

Any one have a picture of where the starter is located?

Either I'm retarded or it's just really early and I'm out of it, but I can't find it.

I need to replace it today and it doesn't help not knowing where it is.

Thanks.

No. Two bolts, get them off from up top, then go under and reach up and disconnect a connector and a wire and you're done.

No need for taking off the intake manifold to get to the starter, it will just take a little finesse to get it out. Not hard at all though! :)

Not hard at all?! It's impossible to get to.

There has to be an easier way.

Anyone have any ideas? or pictures that would help?

I can't get to this thing at all, or see the bolts...

My head is off but you will understand location. Starter is circled in red and bolts are circled in yellow.

Doing my starter today. How the hell do you get your hands down passed all the wires/hoses and get to the bolts...and then to actually get the starter out...jeez far from "easy"

Well, lets see...you can REMOVE things first; OR you can learn how to use tools to do one of the easiest jobs on these cars. 2 bolts are a pretty darn hard job; gosh, theres things in the way...what do you want a cookie?

I usually NEVER rant off, but if you guys are complaining about two darn bolts, you should either sell your car and buy something else, or man up and grow a set.

The DSM was originally created to make ordinary people into master mechanics. If you don't want to wrench on a car, buy a different car.

[/RANT] ROFL

BTW, good post Keith -- the pictures are excellent and should have made this job straight forward for the noobs.

Anyone out there actually changed a starter and a 2g GSX ? I have taken the bolts off.... and am in the process of getting the bastard out. I haven't disconnected the wires cause I can't even see the damn things. CAn I take the starter out and then disconnetc the wires? If not, what is the mecanism the wires are conenced..... remove bolt or snap off etc....
This sucks arse.

.P

From Keith's pics earlier in the thread, it looked like the '2 bolts' were coming from right under where the fuel line meets the fuel rail. Is this a correct assumption? All I am trying to do is replace the wire going from the battery to the starter. Do I need to remove the starter in order to do this?

Currently, I am in the process of installing a new fuel line/filter, etc - so My battery, trah, emmissions stuff and hoses are all out of the way. I can reach under the intake manifold and feel where the cable bolts up, but I think I will have a problem getting the bolt off (or putting it back on if I get that far). I tried to go under the car and if I get my head right under the downpipe, I can see it, but there is no way I can reach up through the chassy without removing the downpipe, which I am not going to do. :barf:

Any ideas? Are you guys getting to the starter from above the engine, below the engine, or underneath the car?

:beatentodeath:

For the power wire (from positive terminal to starter), there is no need to remove the starter. Just make sure you disconnect the grounds from the battery before doing any work. You can get at the starter from either above or below (I just took mine out last weekend and got at it easily from below). Just pull back the small protective boot over the nut that is holding the ring onto the stud from the starter. Remove the small nut (10mm maybe?). Slide off the ring, then undo the small one wire clip from the starter, which is just above where the ring was. Then you can pull the wire out and install the new one.

You can see pictures of what I'm talking about here:

You will probably also have to remove this plug as I believe it's on that same harness:
