today i was driving around town alot and when i came to a light, my car just decided to stop......um i tried to increase the idle via BISS screw.......but now i have periodic idle surge from 800 to 1500 can anyone please help!

thks

ok well in more detail i will explain what has happened...ok without touching a thing on the motor after these periodic shutdowns do to low rpms and ruff idle......i decided to turn up the idle screw which is located on the throttle body......i turned it so it would idle approv 800 rpm.....well took it for a lap and when i came to a stop and allowed it to idle it gradually increases to 1200 to 1500 rpms then goes back down to around 800 and then surges up up again....

What is the cause of this?

Why did my car just start to idle real low and shutdown?

Why is it surging?

Any ideas will HELP>>>PLEASE!!!

More than likely you decided to start turning the screw, right? That is WRONG! You need to ground the plug on the firewall so your engine doesn't adjust timing as well as grounding pin 1 of the OBD2 port. I'm assuming you drive a 2g because, frankly, I have no freakin' idea because you haven't filled out your vehicle info. HINT HINT! Also could be your ISC is going bad. I believe vfaq has tutorials on how to check if your ISC is going bad. Fill out your vehicle info.

ok well I filled out my vehicle info.......I do not understand what you mean by what you said above.........you are saying that that screw adjusts not only the idle but the the timing as well ........ well if this is the case did I hurt anything by adjusting this.

Explain to me the procedure by which to ground what you are talking about.....I am clueless.

thks,

The screw is supposed to adjust the idle. However if you don't ground the plugs that you're supposed to, you engine will try and correct itself everytime you adjust the biss (base idle set screw). To do it properly, there is a brown plug near the firewall behind the throttle body that needs to be grounded. Put an alligator clip on it and put it on ground somewhere. Also, under your dash you'll find the OBD plug. You have to ground pin #1. At that point you can start turning the BISS and start setting idle. You can also check that the o-ring on your BISS is still good. There is also a chance that your ISC is dying which is causing the crappy idle as well. Check out www.plymouthlaser.com and look under "engine mods and maintenance." Read over the BISS o-ring replacement.
