would a stock boost gauge read if the wastegate actuator was stuck?

I've had my car for a few months and just haven't had the money to put up performance mods. I had to do all breaks and some front suspension work. Anyway, the stock boost gauge goes from vac to 0. The car is not very fast either so I will say that it probably isn't boosting. However, I took the hose off the turbo and everything seemed alright from what I've read on here. I know the stock boost gauge is a piece, but would it read if my wastegate is stuck open? I'm not really experienced enough with the car to figure out why it's not boosting. Is this something a mechanic would know? Thanks.

Factory boost gauge does NOT read the actual boost of the car. It is controlled by the ECM which guestimates what the boost should be at the given throttle and RPM. It is not accurate whatsoever.

So would it be a good idea to get a mbc and a boost gauge, and then try to figure out what's up with the turbo? Or maybe have a mechanic look at it? I've never read about a stock gauge reporting 0 boost.

At least get a boost gauge for now, It will tell you wether it's a bad boost gauge or the turbo is not spooling. Please complete your profile, it's hard to help you not even knowing if you're 1g or 2g, which turbo...etc.
