Ideal Length for Timing belt tool?

Well I got a length of rod and I'm going to cut it up and make some Timing belt tools with it. What do you think Is the perfect length and thead length(4"?)? I'll thread the one end ..then a bit on the other and stack and weld two nuts on it.

I might have a few left over after I make them for a few friends if anyone is interested in a nice cheap tool.
