I have a 1997 with a 6bolt swap. So I have a 1g CAS. 95-96 have a grounding wire for setting timing. 97-99 don't. But in the same location as the 95-96, according to my 98 service manual, there are 2 plugs. 1 says Fuel pump check conncetor and 2 says Engine speed detection connector. Could this be the elusive grounding wire for setting Timing?

The fuel pump check terminal allows you to apply 12v to power the pump or to measure that power is coming out of the fuel pump relay.

The engine speed detection connector is the tach signal (actually 1/2 the engine speed since it's from one coil not both).

Neither are the timing set terminal. I'd have to look closely at a later 2G ECU diagram to see if there is even a pin off the ECU for setting the timing. Normally you would have to use the factory MUT to set the ECU in timing check mode. The may have dropped the pin since you can't actually set the timing with a fixed CAS.

I've just been using a timing light and setting it at 5 BTDC, my pocket logger is showing 10-12 degrees at idle 750-850 rpm. If I try to set the timing VIA logger it won't idle, it just dies. I can get it to 8 degrees but then it idles like crap and dies.

1Gina2G isn't my strong point :) so I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

The datalogger and ECU assume base timing is set to 5BTDC. Since you can't lock the ECU in set timing mode it's going to apply normal idle timing advance while your trying to adjust the CAS. What I think you should do is try and get the timing as shown by the front cover timing marks and the timing as show by the logger to agree. If the logger says the timing is 10-12 degrees then adjust the CAS so the timing mark is at 10-12 degrees. When they are in sync at idle they will be in sync the rest of the time and your base timing will be aprox 5 BTDC.

Is that what your doing?

I set the timing, using a timing light, so that the mark on the crank pulley lines up with 5 BTDC. My logger says 10-12 BTDC.
So what your saying is, I should set the timing mark to read 10-12.

I tried that. If I try to match the logger, what happens is the logger timing goes up or down with turning the CAS. I can't get it to match.

The timing changes as you move the CAS because the ECU isn't locked in set tiiming mode and so the ECU is constantly changing the ignition timing as the rpms change.

When you set the timing to 5 and the logger is saying it's 10 your actually 5 degrees retarded.
Move the CAS let it stabilize, check it, adjust some more.

There may be some other way, but I don't know about it.

I'm not too concerned about the timing being retarded. But I would like it to be right. The more advance the more power to a point, too much advance possibly kaboom.

I appreciate your help Steve.

I'll mess with it today after work. I will report back my findings.

I got the timing front cover mark at 10 BTDC and the Logger reading 10 BTDC. So they both agree. I'll drive it like that and see what happens. If I try to lower the timing on the front cover the logger timing won't adjust down with it. So I went up with the timing and surprising enough the logger stayed at 10 and the timing light stayed at 10 also. So we'll see.

Thanks George
