Today i am buying an 1997 eagle talon tsi awd. :hellyeah: The car is sup-post to have a new transmission with 7k miles along with the clutch. The engine miles is unknown but i believe it is the stock 7 bolt unless it was swapped out with another one. Car is sitting on 19 inch rims with good tires and rims. The interior is in need of help. I plan on redoing the headliners and making everything look nice. The car drives good tho. My only concerns are that the owner says sometimes first gears grinds if u try and put it in to early and if get on it 2nd gear will grind unless u let the rpms go down a little.

Im just looking for some advice on what to expect, what to do, what not to do, performance upgrades, how to make the car last forever, maintness, headliner repair help, valve cover seal replacement help. Let me no what you think and what i should do. The engine looks all stock which i like because then i can do my own mods
:rocks: :D ROFL LOL :hellyeah: :) :thumb: ;) :aha: :hmm:

New transmission that grinds second? By new does he really mean used transmission? That would make me suspicious of the whole car. Make sure you go over it thoroughly.

A compression test & cutting open the oil filter to check for metal would be on the top of my list.

Also ask him to have the car "cold" when you get there. Start it up, take it for a spin "over 15 minutes" let it get up to temp & see if you smell/hear anything. Then park the car, go eat or something & then get back in it. I've heard plenty of stories about guys buying cars they test drove for like 10 minutes, then on the way back home it breaks down & have some unsuspecting problems.

Sounds like the classic 1st and 2nd worn syncros issue (maybe they didn't replace syncros during their tranny rebuild).

Do: To test your syncros have the tranny in neutral, motor running and without pushing in on the clutch, start moving the shifter toward (but not into) a gear. The syncro cones (on inside of sync ring) should be trying to slow down the geartrain, thus it will slow down the motor a bit. If the syncro is excessively worn you'll get grinding (since the speeds won't match) instead of motor slowing. This test can be done in any gear to test syncros.

The real question is how much is he asking for it? It all depends on the price and does he have any receipts to confirm any of the "work" on the car?

Shoulda let me check it first... Does sound a tad shady that a "new" transmission is grinding. I guess we'll see.

It runs good that i know of, im sure there are enough people out here that can help me repair it if something goes wrong goes wrong

I got the car, is actually shifts nice 2nd gear goes not grind i think the guy didn't no how to shift right or something. First gear is a little touchy, you have to be completely stopped or very close to it, or it will grind or hit a little bit. Also if u let the car sit in neutral or 2nd gear then go into first at a stop light it seems to grind a little then too. Any ideas? I was told it needs different gear oil. I just redid the headliner for my first time, it actually looks really good!

sometimes when im at a stop sign or light and i have the car sitting in second with the clutch in and i try and go in first it will grind sometimes as well, but if i go from 2nd to first right away it wont

get some BG synchromesh tranny fluid.

This is probably the worst thing you can put in a Mitsu transmission. Get some Mitsu 75-90, DiaQueen, or Redline MTL.

U should pull the tranny filter and see if theres any shavings

Where exactly is the filter located on a manual transmission? ;)

It's vertically mounted alongside the front differential ring gear; not so easy to check.

I'm curious which you meant and which Wes was referring to as being bad for mitsu trannies?

Both Synchromesh/Synchroshift type oils

Sheptrans includes Pennzoil Synchromesh as one of their recommended gear oils btw.

Shep is the only one that recommends it, Tre and Jacks both specifically say not to use it. They all recommend redline and Shep sells redline products.

TRE: "While it has been found that the Synchromesh/Synchroshift type oils can sometimes improve the effectiveness of the synchronizers, allowing for faster shifts at higher rpms, this oil does not have enough film strength to ensure long gear and bearing life for the Mitsubishi transmissions"

Jacks: "DO NOT use Synchromesh, BG Synchroshift I or II, or Royal Purple. These fluids will destroy synchros and gears and void your warranty!"

well congrats on the buy! my recommendation is if you don't already have it get ecm link. best buy I ever made for mine.
