G'day From the land of oz,

So Ive bought myself a 1992 Mitsubishi Galant HH GSR N/T DOHC Hatchback

Just as a run around to get me to work and back. Picked it up for $1100 as it has really high milage. Ive spent about a month fixing it up, replacing all belts, filters, flushed oil and coolant and fixed some minor gearbox leaks(drivehaft seal and shift fork o-ring) and all seems to be running really well.

However, once warmed up there is a constant stream of steam from the exhaust pipe on idle, and on acceleration a small amount of water comes out and considerably more steam. If I turn on the A/C while idling warm engine, steam goes away but comes back when throttle is applied.

First thoughts were leaking head gasket, however there is no coolant loss at all, and the steam is definitly water steam not coolant burning, as there is no burnt coolant smell, and the water out the exhast pipe is water, not coolant. Also there is no contamination in oil, no air bubbles in cooling system and no overheating problems.

In no way is this effecting the performance of the car, however its annoying to be driving around a car blowing steam, just looks bad!

Have checked all spark plugs and are fine, no white soot. Also i live in a very warm area, and it is definitly not condensation, only occurs when engine is warm and been driving...
Im stumped so hopefully someone has some ideas...

Cheers

is the catalitic converter still on the car? if so the by product is steam....

I have an Integra that does this often but mostly in the winter. You can attribute what you are seeing to catalytic converter by product. You should normally see an increase in this steam when the humidity is up.
