Quick search on the net came up with this meaning: As mostly attributed, to defeat someone very badly. As I believe my grandmother meant it, beating them sufficiently to return them to the path of rightousness

In other words, to get Pwned!! But there is a big difference in playing around, and abusing a child. They look like they were having a lot of fun.
