yup thats right traded my 95 gsx shell that was rusting away for a 85 white porsche 944 5 speed with 130k miles that needs a rear end.

ohhhh soooo jealous!!!!! is it a 951? (turbo model)

You know, if I remember right, the "rear end" on a 944 is actually the transmission itself.

pics in 2 days. i think it is too. crap i totally forgot it. he launched it at 3 grand and then it didnt move anymore. im gonna put my recaros in it. its gonna be sweet. its non turbo. turbo has 220hp non turbo is 175hp. id rather stay non turbo and have a nice car to drive around

No. It's a live drive shaft. The new Corvette's, the GTR, and a few other cars have it. It goes Engine block -> driveshaft -> transmission. Even in neutral, the drive shaft is spinning.

It's weird. I didn't know it until we had a 944 in the shop where I work and I got to see underneath it.

yup and the clutch is in there in the back. now i gotta figure out what broke inside or just call up a junkyard and get one.im thinking i should get a lightweight flywheel too might as well. since that'll be easy to do.

I had a 83 944, it was a fun car until the transmission gave out, which is in the back. This causes the car to have a near 50/50 weight distribution with great handling.

Great cars- the turbo's are superior in so many ways. But a good dd, gonna be mighty expensive/frustrating to repair.

yea i just joined a porsce forum. you never pop the clutch on an na it always destroys the ring gear. which seems to have happened on this one. appearently i can change the tranny in under 3 hours. very easy job i guess

well we bought a totalled porsche for 200 bucks with 36k on it with a 5 speed tranny still in the rear. so here are pics of both cars

Nice deal. I like that beetle in the background on that last pick. German cars are cool. I think that list of front-engine porsches omitted the 962, while the 914 is mid-engined, like the boxster.

I saw a chassis from a late-model corvette in the show-room at a junk-yard in Spokane last week. I was suprised to see the rear-trans on it. It looked pretty cool, though.
