Not sure where to post this but does anyone know the stock weight of a 4g63 block with stock pistons and crank?

Ulgh, there's not another motor between the two coasts?

Anyway, you Band-It to a very strong pallet and take it to a national trucking company. Count on anything sticking out to get broken off. Your pal gets it at their terminal closest to him. Each of you will be expected to be able to get it onto and off of the dock.

 man I cant find reasonable quote here to ship this motor. Anyone know what this thing weighs, or who to ship through?

I'm currenlty in the process of shipping two 4G63T's home for some projects to work on over Easter. I'll be shipping it via FedEx ground. Basically, I only need the short blocks so I don't have a complete engines to ship but this might work for you too.

Every last bracket is off. No front engine case (along with it the oil pump, balance shafts, front belt pulley). No oil pan or oilpump pickup. No head. All that is left is the crank, block, and pistons.

Go buy a $7 sheet of polystrene foam at Home depot. A $4 18 gallon rubbermaid tote at Walmart. (make sure it's the colored ones that are the pliable polypropelene. Not the clear type) . You cut a piece of foam and lay it in the bottom of the tote. Turn the motor upside down and set it inside the rubbermaid tote. Next you pack at random, pieces of foam on each side of the engine. You won't need it on the ends because the engine just fits inside. Cut another piece of foam to place on top. Put the lid on. Then duct tape the hell out of the lid to make sure it doesn't come off.

Shipping weight will right at 150 lbs. Packing size is around 24X18X18. The cost is about $70.

The head and remaining parts you can pack in another 18 gallon tote. I'm not sure what the weight will be, but worst case it's another 150 lbs and another $70. However, it will be less. I don't know how much.

I'm sure the 420a would be similar in weight and size and you could do the same. Using the fedex freight will only run you $250+ to ship it and any other freight company will likely charge you more than $200. Using FedEx ground and packing it as I did will run you no more than $140.

Best of luck.

If you break the motor up as I did, you'll be able to use the FedEx ground service. It has to be under 150 lbs, which it just does. Barely. Like I said, the 420a should be about the same.

How far are you shipping it? I'm sendng mine 1400 miles.

Oh, and to use the 150 lb limit, it needs to be picked up at the delivery center. Which for me, won't be a problem when I get home.

There is a 70 lb limit for home delivery.

I shipped my transmission weighing 140lbs through FedEx ground and it was like $68. I didn't bother to ask about pickup, I just brought it into one of their delivery centers.

That is odd, because when I got my transmission back they delivered it back to my doorstep.

I agree, but that is what I was told at the service center. It also states it on their website.

I just got a 3000gt tranny shipped to me via UPS and it weighed around 140 lbs or so. It was also delivered to my doorstep. So, I don't know. Maybe UPS is different than FedEx. Or maybe it depends on the location. The zip I'm sending mine to is remote.

i recently bought a 420a and it was around 350. so im sure a 4g would be close. :dsm:

No way is it 350lbs. The head weighs about 60 and the assembled short block is certainly less than 200lbs. I've taken my 4G63 head off my motor, and I just pulled a 4G64 block from the junkyard so those figures are my guesses from lifting them.

the head weighs in at 35 lbs bare....the block i carry into the machine shop and to the car and i'd guess it to be around 175 bare.............. :dsm:

theres no way its 175 bare... the block my little 13 year old brother can lift it.... 125 tops....

I weighed a block to ship it and it tipped the scales at 85 lbs. the block was bare no pistons rods crank or oil pan.

I am in the market for another motor and I have a seller with a motor for me. We are now trying to figure out shipping costs and what the best method of shipment would be. If anybody has insight or experience on this please chime in! Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

true everything sticking out will break off, but you and the shipper will probably not be responsible for taking the pallet on and off the dock, ive shipped some pretty large car parts through a company called yellow, they were great! they not only took the pallets off my truck and onto the dock but they also shrink rapped everything at no cost, plus they do collect so that way no one pays for shipping up front, and the buyer pays for shipping when he/she recieves the parts.... hope that helped

Yes, we ship GM, Ford, and Mopar crate motors every week. We use Yellow Truck Freight. They seem to be the best for us so far. It usually runs about $125 for a crate motor to ship almost anywhere in the continious 50 states..... I actually shipped an assembled Motown block to a guy in FL last week. It shipped Next Day Air Truck Freight and it only costed him $310. I was surprised it didnt cost much more. If you are part of a business and are shipping truck freight you'll get a better deal. Most usually, the general public gets a crappy deal..... Definately look into Yellow Freight though.... :thumb:

I'd guess 300 - 350lbs for a complete engine.
Me and a buddy of mine picked one up and put it in the back of a van with relative ease. The junkyard owner was in shock :thumb:

125 are you kidding ? i sent a BARE and i mean bare, 420a block, no pistons, no rods, no oil pan, just the block and crank and it weighed in at 146lbs, a full head (420a) w/all valvetrain and head weighed 62 lbs ( this is all actually weighed at UPS/Fedex not estimates ) so throw some oil, rods pistons and an oil pan say its 175 now.

complete shortblock minus alt, starter, and ac pump is about 160 pounds
head with intake and all the junk is 70 pounds

total 230 MAX

I just lifted my new 6 bolt out of a parts car with a little help from a friend by hand.

I rebuild and ship motors all the time. The best way I have found is using YELLOW trucking. Call the 800 number and tell them you want to ship a used car motor that weighs about 200LBS from terminal to terminal. You get a discount for dropping off and picking up at the terminal. All you to do is wire the motor to a pallet and wrap it in plastic. I have shipped from WI to TX for as little as $120.

Just be sure to tell them its terminal to terminal and that its used not new car parts.

Just wondering if anyone know an approx weight of a complete 4g63t turbo longblock, everything but the tranny. Thanks for the help.

my guess would be in the range of 300-350 lbs. for the whole assembly, but under 200 for just the short block. An assembled long block for a small block chevy weighs about 450-500, and thats no accessories, ignition or exhaust. Thats all iron components, a larger block, and two heads. There is no way an aluminum head and 4cyl block weighs even close to that, even with accessories and turbo mounted.

I'm wondering if anyone might happen to know how much a long block 4G63T weighs?? I'm considering having one shipped to me and I have some "connections" with an overnight shipping company that coupd probably get it to me really cheap, BUT I need to give them an approximate weight (crated) so that I can find out if it's worth shipping it or just driving to get it. Thanks in adance!!
