Nope, they're fine. My streets are 17x8 +42mm offset wearing 245/40/17s. (See profile for more.) But you will probaby have to roll the rear fender lips, if your car is lowered and/or on soft springs.

Stock wheels off an Evo8 are 17x8, 5x114.3, +38mm offset

These are fine for both 235/45/17 and 245/40/17, but will require that you roll the rear fender lips if the car is lowered and/or on soft springs.

ps. Google is your friend; this stuff isn't hard to look up

17x8 with a 40mm offset is the ideal size if you want to run 8" wide tires. you can run 235/40 on those wheels without rubbing or 245/40 and you would need to remove the front spash guards. "on a 1st gen"

245/35/17s??? Oh, yeah, I see those for sale all the time. They're usually right next to the 235/40/17s. Even Wal-Mart carries these.

And there is no need to remove any front splash guards with 245/40/17s on a +42mm offset, so there would be no need with any lower offset, so what are you talking about?

Oops. Forgot the emoticons. Suffice it to say that question the knowledge-base of slvrstingray and leave it at that.

with my experience, if a car is lowered with a 17x8 40mm offset with 245/40/17's under hard cornering, the tire will rub away at the spash guard on a 1st gen... i dont know about the 2g however...

that is all.... Ray

That's great, Ray, but did you happen to read what I wrote and then what you wrote? I currently run 245/40/17s on +42mm offsets on a 2G AWD and it doesn't get much harder, in terms of cornering, than autoXing and, yet, there's no rubbing. So the idea that +40mm will rub is just silly. But if you need verification, my R-compounds are 245/45/16s (exactly the same size as 245/40/17) on +38mm offsets and these produce no rubbing, either.

Maybe the rest of your post was a bunch of typos, but those tires that you suggested don't exist.

Let's stick to answering questions for which we have relevant experience, OK? That includes checking what kind of car the poster has and suggesting real items and not vaporware.

Yes. At stock height, you won't even have to roll the fender lips, although I'd do it anyway in case you run over a really fat hedgehog.

Note that you will be stressing your wheel bearing more than before (but you didn't ask about that, so let's pretend that I didn't bring it up).

OMG Sorry about the mix up... and typos... i was thinking about too many things at once: "studying for calc finals and trying to post tire sizes when you're tired, don't mix!" BTW you're right in that 245/35/17's don't exist in the US... but they do in europe! I got mixed up with my 95 eclipse's 235/35/18's and the 245/40/17's on my friend's car, when i was posting... I'm still new to the whole "forum" thing... i'll be more careful in making suggestions and i'll pay more attention to the "poster's vehicle." and i'll try not to suggest anymore vaporware... :thumb:

I've done track days with my 17x8 38mm offset wheels and 245/40 tires, not rubbing problems for me. H&R springs with konis.
What's your ride height at slvrstingray?

No, they will do just fine. I have 17X8s, which were on a stock suspension for almost 6 months, with no problems.

Hi, I'm looking at buying a set of 5zigen 17x8 FN01RCs. They dont come in +40, so would you recommend +35 or +43 offset instead? Also, what tires are you running? I looked at the victoracers and A032Rs, but only the A032Rs come in 245/40/17. I don't want to go with hoosiers, are there any other options? Thanks!

This thread is about 2Gs. Do not take anything that we've said as being definitely relevant to a 1G.

With that said, it seems a good time to remind everyone that - on a 2G, at least - the issue is almost always the corner of the rear tire hitting the vertical link. Therefore, you need to be very careful about taking advice that is expressed in terms of tire size (only) and not both size and brand. The size of a tire is the overall width. What matters RE fitment on a 2G is the treadwidth. And different tires have radically different tread widths given the same size.

Example: Falken Azenis 225s are almost as wide at the tread as a Kumho MX 245. Another example: Hoosiers are much wider (for the same size) than V700s or V70As. So, if the last poster were in a 2G, I would say that he might be able to get away with +43 if he were running V700s or V70As, but would have to drop back to +38 if he were running Hoosiers.

In general: If you are cutting it close, then you don't want to just talk about size. You need to specify the brand and model of the tire, as well.

On a 1G the clearance problem area is the rear trailing arm, which isn't affected *as* much by the tire selection.
I have put on 16x8" rims with a 225/50 and it cleared barely. We ground down the extra material on the trailing arm for more clearance.

In that case it depends on other things as well. What brakes are you going to be running? Do you do many track days? Keep caliper clearance in mind as well when you're looking at wheels. A wheel with a larger radius on the inside of the spoke will need a smaller offset to clear the brakes.
With my 12.2" rotors and wilwood FSL calipers my RPO1s have tons of clearance. To run them with stoptechs you need a 3mm spacer.
If they're for your race wheels I'd probably just go with the 35 offset since I doubt they'll be any clearance problems. They will stick out of the front fenders though, so if you have any bottoming problems expect your fenders to get trashed.

I'm running 245/40 Kumho MXs now. They do great for a street tire and still hold up at track days. A couple of my friends used them this year as well and we were all happy with them, for what they are. Definetly not a race tire still, but about as close as I've found for a true street tire.

In the 245/40 at a reasonable price I don't know of anything else. There is the toyo RA1 in a 235/40r17 though. When I get my trailer setup and another set of rims I'll probably be running those.

I'm currently running the 2 piston calipers + 12.5" AEM rotors + porterfield R4-E pads. I'm trying to do open track days about once a month (it used to be 2-3 times a yr when I was still in school), so I'm pretty sure I'll upgrade to some real big brakes sometime in the future. Do you think I'll be able to get away with a +43 offset? I really don't want the tires to stick out, so I was thinking maybe I'll get the rims in +43 and see how it works and get spacers if I need to. But if you know +43 will rub for sure, then I'll take your advice and get +35. Either that or I'll go with 235/40 tires instead of 245s. I pretty much have my heart set on getting the A032Rs for now because they last longer than the kumhos, even though they're slower. Not sure about the RA-1s though, I heard they last a long time too, but I don't know where to get them and how much they cost. What do you think? Thanks!

ps sorry bout hijacking the tread .... just a few more questions and I'll be outta here :)

How Do you guys roll the fenders?

before was gonna see about rolling fenders on an audi, with a tihng that attatches to the hub, and your crank it back and forth while putting heat on the fender.

I don't think you'll rub with the 43, you might need to grind the trailing arm a little depending on roughly the factory left yours.
I'd just be worried about caliper clearance to the wheel spokes. Stoptech has a template on their website you can print out that gives a good idea on fitment. Check the 43mm with those first.

The average price I found on the toyos was in the 175-200 range, slightly more than the yokohamas. Only a few dealers had them, I spent a while searching on google.
I didn't call about them at all though because I have to get a trailer setup first (can't fit 4 tires in the car with the cage) and another set of rims.

I've never rolled fenders before.
