I am trying to remove the inner tie rod. I have taken the bolt off of the outer tie rod and am trying to get the inner tie rod off. This is the driver side inner tie rod. I cant get it to break loose and turn. I tried using PB blaster, everytime i turn the tie rod from the rod,the rod the bearing turns. So than i went to the end of the tie rod put pliers on there and all i do is just strip it, it wont turn. am i doing something wrong? do i have to something with the washer?

Yes. :D You'll need a tie-rod removal tool. Go to AutoZone or Checker/Schucks/Kragen and rent one. You'll need to put down a deposit, but you'll get it back when you return the tool.

I couldn't find one at AutoZone - they had the outer tie rod removal tool but not the inner.
The outer rod was easy, used a rented removal tool (kind of like a two jaw puller) from Autozone.

As to the Inner Tie Rod, that one was tricky but doable - tried all kind of wrenches and vice grips, but there is so little room to maneuver in there.

I made a bunch of calls to different auto parts stores and finally found what I needed

Had to go over to Pep Boys to buy one. It's called an Inner Tie Rod Removal Tool (easy, eh? ;) )

It was a little over $50 with tax.

It's a long tube that slides over the rod and fits directly over the flat parts of the large round piece of the inner tie rod (you'll see what I mean after you get the outer part of the tie rod off and the dust boot off). You connect a half inch drive socket to the end and twist it off (note: try using a breaker bar to get some leverage at first as it's on there pretty right!) This tool can be used on a variety of cars, that way you don't feel like you've bought a 'model specific' tool. :D

forget the pickle fork. Pickle fork=ripped boot. Use a hammer and smack the big metal part the tie rod end bolts to. The shock/vibration from the hit will break the tie rod end loose.

U can get a balljoint seperater tool to remve the balljoint on the till rod with breaking the grease seal

First, take a smallish flat blade screw driver and a hammer and tap the lock washer away from the inner tierod. I then turn the steering wheel to the oppisite wheel that im working on, then i use a very large set of channel lock pliers and just twist that bi*** off!

these are like 14 to 16 in. channel locks BTW. good hunting!

Yes. Works every time.

Sorry if this is threadjacking, but this thread seems pretty much over. Where can you get inner tie-rods from? All I've ever seen for sale is the outers...

Thanks!
