I have a 98 gst and I want to put a coilover kit on it but im not sure which to get. Are the Ground Control coilovers good?? Any recommendations would help. Also Im trying not to send alot of money.
Thanks

Well for coil-overs you have to spend the cash and Ground-Controls are the best.

Later,

The best non-threaded coilovers you can get are Ground Controls, period. Unless you wanna shell out $1200-$1800 for a fully threaded shock/coilover spring setup, which is probably overkill in your case.

I'll reiterate what has already been said.

Suspensions come in 2 classes: street affordable and race affordable (there is also pure race but unless you have 10k to play with, don't bother).

1) Street Affordable

Shocks include Koni Yellows, AGX's, Tokico Illuminas. All can be had for fairly cheap with the Koni's being the best as far as valving goes for performance and the most expensive of this group. Figure anywhere from 500-800 dollars for brand new shocks.

Springs/Coilovers include Ground Control and a bunch of others. GC's are by far the best quality. Eibach is the spring supplier for GC but I prefer Hypercoil springs mated to the GC coilovers. Figure ~400 for the coilovers and if you own a 2G, you want to get the front upper mounts @ ~100 more to get more shock travel in the front. You can get just lowering springs but the adjustable ride height of the coiloers makes it worth it to go with CO's.

RM Swaybars are pretty much it. Good quality but not tuneable. Bigger and stiffer for AWD is good. For FWD you need to do some research so you know how swaybars will affect your ride.

2) Race Affordable

Now you are talking complete systems. JIC, Tein, Shocktek (who are no longer in business), etc.

Usually the shock and springs come from the same place, a la JIC and Tein. Others you can mix and match. Expect to pay 1800 to 4000 for this setup.

3) The other is race only but you are talking $750 to $1500 per shock, per corner, and that doesn't include the coilovers or springs or swaybars. No need to go any further with this.

And just as a data point, I race fairly serious autocross with GC coilovers and Koni Yellows, RM swaybars and a few other things and I am just now maxing out the system. For a street only car, I don't think you need to go any farther than option 1) above.

Tein is $950 a set now. This true coilover system is not over $1000. If I were you, I'd go for tein since brand new GC coilover + Koni shocks = few bills less than the tein setup. I was in my friend's audi and bimmer both have true coilovers. The ride is very different from springs + shocks. Better handling, less noise, less moving parts of your car.

I heard from a couple of shops that ground control is not the best. that their technology is old. that's why i went when skunk2. i also changed my shocks too. my ride is about the same but a little stiffer which i like. but that was like 4 years ago it might have changed by then. just letting u know what a few shops told me.

Trev knows his stuff.

Teins are really the way to go.. the shocks are matched and tuned to their spring for an awesome ride and even better handling. Coilovers are usually have a bit stiffer ride than shocks/springs, but its up to you if want that or not. I'm getting teins soon for cost. Can't wait.

btw, running coilovers on stock shocks will blow them up hella quick and give you one hell of a ####ing bad ride. i rode in a friends eclipse that had gc's with blown to shit stock shocks and my back hurt for a few days after only a 2 mile drive. i have race springs set to full stiffness koni's most of the time and the ride doesnt even compare. never got a complaint from the bro's or ho's.

I have skunk2's on my 2g gsx I think the ride is too stiff, sucks if you have to drive the car everyday. I only drive it everyonce in a while so it's fine but if I had to drive it every day I would go crazy. If ground controls are smoother get umm but if you want a real sporty stiff suspension go with the skunks :dsm: Kevin
