I want to go with a nice set up for my 2g eclipse. It is lowered about 1.5 and want to go with some 17inch wheels.

What are some bad ass combo setups?????? I want 17 but not sure x 7.5 or 8 and the Offset

List your set up... or give me some advice. Thanks. :dsm:

Go 8". Get more contact patch on there. 17" is nice since it's a little cheaper if you are going to get GOOD tires and not all weather/quiet ride tires. I just don't go with 18" because of weight. It depends also what you plan to do, your budget. Remember tires/rims make the car, but the tires are the most important. My specs are listed in profile.

jtoby, in that linked thread you wrote:

Can't we just replace 7b with 245/40/17 on 17x8 +40 and call it a day?

I realize tire tread width varies, but roughly how much spindle clearance does a 245 on an 8" wheel w/40mm offset give?

I have 17x8 with a +40 offset, and with 235/45 Advan tires there is less than 1 cm clearance on the inside rear, it's very tight. I wouldn't try a 245 on my car without getting a few mm worth of spacer first, and rolling the fenders of course.

You have to keep the curve of the rear knuckle in mind. A 245/40/17 is shorter than a 235/45/17, which is why there's no problem. I've had Kumho MXs and now SPTs. Both were fine and the MXs are pretty square (which is the issue). Go to TireRack.com and check the treadwidth for more information. It's the diameter and treadwidth that matter, since it's the corner of the tire that always hits first.

I'm a huge fan of Kumho street tires. If it never rains, get MXs. If rain is an issue, get the SPTs. And I can tell you that both fit fine on a 17x8 +40.

Here's the other way I'm looking at this...before I crawl under the car again with a ruler. This may help the OP make a decision too.

-I am going to use 235/45's on 8" wheels;
-I am not going to use a much wider or "squarer" than average tire for the size;
-Lip rolling is a definite;
-Late 2G's are reputed to have a little more spindle clearance (and all four of us are 2Gb's, incl the OP);
-Any rubber out of the fender is unacceptable.

So...I was thinking of 42mm offsets, with a slight possibility of 44mm.

eclipsegsx1736, do you mean cm or mm? If cm, this tends to confirm that 42mm is a go, and 44mm is theoretically possible, depending on tire.

I'm an airhead. The original tires on these wheels were 235/45/17 Kumho 712s. There was no problem at all with fitment ... the issue was the screaming lack of grip and soggy turn-in. They were not only inside a down-ward view of the car, but easily tucked inside a rolled rear fender lip.

I would strongly suggest +40. They not only meet your requirements, but will allow you to run 245/40/17 down the road (as it were), when you want the added torque and lateral grip.

Aha.

So, one more wrinkle before I let this go:

If a 40mm offset 8" wheel with a 235/45 tire is easily flush with the fender lips, presumably a 38mm offset is very close too. Cause I'm looking at 38mm offset 8" wheels and 235's. I believe 38mm offset is the Evo offset too, but I was under the impression they hung way out there.

Ah, well, if you're now open to lower offsets, then we need to talk a bit more about Charybdis, instead of Scylla.

If you lower a lot and then use spacers to correct the rear camber, then you're risking contact with the rear fender, even with a rolled lip. On a +38, 235s should be able to tuck inside with 1/8" to 1/4" of spacers. My 245/40/17s do not tuck, but I have 3/8" of spacers.

If you look at my Avatar: those are 245/45/16 Hoosiers on a +38. No way are those rears getting inside the fenders (but they don't have to, since I have 425# springs).

In any event, I've seen a few 2Gs with Evo wheels and 235/45/17s. Seemed fine to me, but I have no idea if they had spacers.

My current 7" (40mm offset ) wheels with 225/45 on too-soft Eibach springs rub the unrolled lip occasionally. A slightly too-low back end (GC coil-overs) and a little too much upper A-arm spacing doesn't help.

I think if I solve all that stuff at once and go to 38mm eights and 235/45's it's a reasonable gamble.
