Comp. Engineering Roll Cage Install

Hello

I am working on installing the Comp. Engineering/Moroso roll bar (8-pt) in my 92 TSi. I have the bk seats, ft seats, carpet, sound deading, dash, center consol etc. all out of the car. 1st question: people that have done this cage before, does the main hoop sit on the floor with the drivers seat? Or on the hump where the passanger's seat would go?

The VFaq seems like it shows it on the passanger seat hump but I cannot tell for sure (crappy pics). There is a pic on the site (a members car) that's red and black with 4 hoosier slick's and an orangish-red painted cage that looks like he has the main hoop on the floor.

Also, there are 2 struts that go from the hoop that are suppose to hit the subframe connectors. (see pic of cage). I don't have subframe connectors and I wasn't planning on buying them. Is this very necessary??

To question 1: You could have it in either spot. It depends more on the space between the drivers seat and main hoop.

To question 2: Since our cars are unibody we have to use 6"x6" steel plates @ every point. Whether you connect the strut bars to the shock towers or floor pan is up to you.

So structurally, it would be okay to run those hoop struts to the floor pan next to (inward of) the hoop legs, as opposed to aftermarket subframe connectors?

Hmm... I don't know why the link doesn't work. I copied right from the browser. Anyway its the dsmparts.com roll cage on the main page. The instructions (from Moroso) instructed me to run those hoop struts to subframe connectors. Since our cars don't have them stock, I am assuming they mean aftermarket ones.

Look at that pic, see the pipes that run on the same plane as the hoop? They attach to the hoop at the same point as the x-member. On the pic, they do not have the 6x6 plates on the end of them. The instructions tell me to weld those to the subframe connectors.

Now I see what you mean. Those, as well as the strut bars (leading towards the rear of the car) will also need to be installed using steel plates. Your instructions are most likely referring to cars with subframes.

Our cars DO have subframes. Should I just weld the struts to the floor with 6x6 plates on the end of them?

Our cars are unibody's, which is stamped steel peices welded and fitted together to make a chassis that is tottally tied in structurally.
Older cars had another frame under the car, made of box steel or similar, that was bolted to the floors, so you could have the rollcage direcly welded to the frame of the car.
the subframe on our cars would be the front and rear suspension assemblies, that can drop out of the bottom of the car with a few bolts.
And yes, weld 6X6 plates to the bottom of the rollcage posts.

There is a boxed subframe that runs under the seats to the rear of the car. You can mount the hoop to the floor or the rear seat hump as long as you weld the plates solid to the subfraim rail. As far as floor or hump, that really depends on how tall you are. If you are really long legged, you should mount the hoop to the seat hump. If you are short legged, mount it to the floor.

Going up a vertical surface at the main hoop is a good idea... try to plate the sill and attach
your plate to that...
