So I'm leaving work last night and the "anti lock" light comes on. I didn't pay much attention because I seem to have a bit of an electrical problem where random lights go on and off every once in a while. However, when I got home and turned off the car, I heard a sort of whirring noise coming from under the hood. It almost sounded like a fan still going. I look under the hood and it's coming from the ABS system. I pulled the fuse so that it wouldn't kill my battery, but I would like for that to not be a a permanent fix. Any suggestions??

I have the same problem on my 92 TSI, pulled the plug on it but I will look into it further this weekend. think one of my sensors went bad or pulled loose.

Have you ever did a brake job on the car? If so, and you compress the caliper pistons without first opening the bleeder screw on ABS, the old, dirty fluid in the bore is forced back through, and could cause one of the valves to stick open on the system. Does your ABS still work?

My '95 GSX does the same thing. Last summer it made the whirring sound twice and i had to pull the battery cable. Now that it is warm again the ABS light is back on but no ABS problems yet.

Sounds like the ABS relay has stuck. A temporary fix is to lightly hit the ABS relay to get it "unstuck" sometimes. It's the larger relay in the box above the ABS pump. It'll most likely come back and more frequently as time goes on. CAPS says the part number is MB618039. They aren't cheap. Around $176 from the dealer. In theory, it's just a high current relay, so one should be able to find it somewhere else for cheaper if they were determined. Hope this helps.
