removal of metal hat on rear strut?

dumb question, but i REALLY need to know how to remove this piece off of the strut shaft, its the metal piece that holds the dust cover on the strut.... please help!

what do you mean hit it hard.... got a technique? i cant get this damn thing off

I mean that it is supposed to slide on and off. So if it ain't doin' that -- probably because it rust-welded itself to the shaft (maybe in a manner that parallels that chick from Goucher I was dating in college, but I digress) -- then you need to get medieval on it's tush (again, similar to ... oh, never mind).
