I got 17" rims which are 7" wide and was wondering if 225/45/17 tires will fit them since I currently got 215/40/17 and they're pretty used up. I don't want to go back to 215/4017 since their too thin.

So, will 225/45/17 tires fit my 17x7 rims?

K, thx for the help.

215s are way too thin if you ask me and the car is only about 3inches from the ground with my current tires and that's without lowering springs.

Yes, but they will buldge.

215 is a better fit.

I did a 235/45/17 on 17x7" rims on my car and bulging was minimal. I'll have to admit with AWD and around 900 mm's of contact patch on the ground traction sure did show itself ROFL . Sam

I had 215s for years on my 17x7s but jumped to 225s to get a bit more contact path and to safeguard my wheels from curb scrapes/potholes.

The ride quality was definitely improved and IMO definitely worth the trade off of a slight loss in steering precision (i.e. sidewall flex) :dsm:

...except 215 is a width, not a sidewall ratio.

So basically I can put my dad's truck's 205/65 on my car and it'll be too low? OMG

Exactly..and to get within the OEM tire height you'd use 45 profile tires on each width tire.
215/45/17s are -6mm from stock and 225/45/17s are +2mm from stock (205/55/16) :dsm:

Likewise. I too run 235/45/17's on 7" wide rims, and have very minimal buldging. Its only another 10cm.
