Ever since I bought my new eclipse whenever I go over small bumpers at low rates of speed I hear a really loud annoying knocking sound coming fromt he passenger strut area like pieces of metal knocking together. I have searched this over and over and CAN NOT find where it is coming from because nothing seems to be loose that I know of. Could this possibly be a bushing or something that is worn out and hitting metal on metal instead of the bushing? My 1g eclipse has started to do this too and when we replaced the axle we checked everything but couldn't find the source of the problem. I wish I could explain the sound alittle better but I can't. Anyone else have this problem and if so anyone know how to fix it? thanks guys

It is more than likely the ball joint. I had the same problem a few years ago and I replaced the ball joint and control arm. It is not the straight one but the curved one behind it.

How hard was the process for this? Something I can accoplish with tools I got at home? or will I need to have anything pressed in at a machine shop or anything?

you probably have a blown strut/shock. this sounds exactly like what I have heard when my DSM and others I know blew a shock. replace you stock shock and i am almost sure the noise will go away.

Did u ever get this fixed? If so, what did u do to fix it? I am having the same problem with my 1G only it's on the front driver's side. I had the control arm bushing and the ball joints changed and it's still making noise (like some metal is loose) when I go over bumps and small dips. This problem started after I installed GR2s so I don't think it's the shocks. I recently installed Sportsline springs and that didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Thanks.

I'm leaning towards a blown strut as well. I blew mine last month. Check it out, or post what it was.

I also suffered from this noise. I took my car to the dealership ad told them i had a blown strut. I was for sure thats what it sounded like but they called and told me it was not my strut it was my control arm. They replaced the control arm and it went away. So i'd say deffently have that checked out.
