I'm interested to know how you snapped a driveshaft. Sure it wasn't a u-joint? Or a rear axle?

i got under it today and it seems like the driveshaft is still in tact. but thats from just lookin at it not takin it a part or anything. im thinkin either the t-case locked up, the joints hold the 3 piece shaft locked up or the rear end gears are gone. if it is one of these 3 possiblities its nother to fix cause i have all of the parts on a donor car in my yard. but ill figure it out. but i guess the cool thing is that if i HAVE to go some where i still can. cause when i was pulling it from where it locked up it snapped something so now i have a FWD tsi awd. its kinda funny.

i got one more question. are the splines on a 1990 awd dsm different from the splines on 93 awd dsm. cause i swapped a motor, tranny, and t-case out of a 90 into my 93. i wonder if that couldve had anything to do with it???

It sounds like you broke your center diff.

If you raise one of the rear wheels off the ground with the car off, can you turn that wheel easily?

im not sure yet. but that what it seems like to me. its been snowy and all the stuff here in NC and i havent had time to do anything with it. i wish it hadnt had messed up, i couldve gone and one awd donuts in the snow but noooooooooooo my cars gotta mess up. thanks for the insight

Yeah, the spline counts are diff between 90 and 93 transmissions.

Witch Splines??? theres two, one That connects the TRanny To the X-Case, and The output Spline on the X-Case to connect to the Driveshaft, now The way I understand it, ALL DRIVE SHAFTS ARE THE SAME. Meaning, ALL OUTPUT SPLINES ON THE x-case ARE THE SAME. SO That couldnt have been the problem, Causing him to granade his rearend. Theres something else goin on.

how hard is it to take a rear end on of a 90 gsx? i have to take it out before this weekend. i have to get the car out of my yard or ill have to pay 100 bones a week until i move it. but its totaled and its kinda hard for me to get under it so about the only way i know to do it is to flip it on its side and unbolt everything i need. im just gonna swap trannys/t-case, driveshaft, and rear end. so that way i know itll work. i need to change trannys anyway so yeah itll all work out ok. thanks for yalls help and when i get it all out and find out what the problem is ill take pics and post them cause i know its gonna look bad what ever it is.

uhmmm..... NO. The center diff is inside the tranny and differentiates power to the front and rear. Your rear diff differentiates power to the right and left rear axles.

Im bout to undertake this Same issue. heres my problem, NO ONE has answerd me about the Drive Shafts, and rear end Ratios.

now on VFAQ theres a how to, on how to Swap a 4bolt Rear into a 90-91 car. it Doesnt say ANYTHING about changing the Drive Shafts, Or Transfercase, or Anything Else. that tells me there all da same! so Can anyone Tell me for sure????

I've never heard of any differences in driveshafts either. The main differences to be aware of are these;
The auto tranny and the manual tranny cars have different rear diff ratio, so they can't be swapped.

3 bolt and 4 bolt rear diffs have different axles, axle splines and hubs, I'm sure you knew that.

Transfer cases have different input shaft spline counts, 21, 22, or 23 splines. This has to match the splne count of the shaft coming out of the trans. If it doesn't the shaft in the trans can be changed easily.

Removing and replacing a driveshaft is easy, except for the part where you have to lay under the car in awkward positions and try to turn wrenches in tight spaces while loose dirt falls in your face, and important little washers from the carrier bearing fall somewhere you can't find, but other than that it's a piece of cake!
