Okay...here is a question. It has be decided by numerous people that indeed my tranny need either replaced/rebuilt. I have a freind who will do it for cost of parts only, and he has rebuilt his own GSX tranny and a 1gen. When I told this to another freind he made the comment that "just because it works now doesnt mean its done right and will last". So my question is in lamens terms how hard is it to rebuild a tranny and should I trust my freind and save the extra cash or pay a "professional"? Any ideas, suggestions, tips would be helpful.

Thank You

well, that would be worth a shot IF he knows what hes doing. but it could be a gamble. thats your decision there. you know his mechanicall ability more than anyone on here would. but if you decide not to, and are willing to ship the tranny to indiana, i ve been doing these for years for a pretty reasonable price. i have two of these cars now. the most recent i have bought is a 90 which i just finished the motor, but the tranny needed syncros. i couldnt drive it when i bought it, so i had no idea what shape the tranny was in. ill have it done later this week when the parts get here. if you wanna give me a call or an email, and let me know what its doing(i assume this is a 5 speed, you didnt say)ill be more than happy to let you know what ithink. thanks, rob

You also have a couple local options in the Pacific Northwest:

Marcus Herman is one of the mechanics at Renton Mitsubishi, and does performance work (including tranny rebuilds) on the side. He has many satisfied customers, including Derek (dieselboy).

Andre is a great mechanic who has worked on my car a couple times, and has a nice new shop in Kent. His place is one of the most recommended shops on the NWDSM mailing list (www.nwdsm.com).

Lucas with English Racing 360-901-3112

If you live closer to Portland, Lucas English does rebuilds, and is a very experienced DSM tuner.

i dropped my tranny off for a rebuild at mercus herman's place in Auburn on tuesday. He is a very nice guy...helps with any questions and is never rude. i have heard many good things about his services. I dont mind paying 300 for the assurance that it will be done right. and 300 is alot less than what i was quoted from many people.

I've got a Shep racing tranny in my car...it shifts gorgeously, and shep himself is one of the coolest guys ever. I love it! Nice to know that this is probably the LAST thing that will break on my car :D

On the other hand, TRE's service can suck my you know what

Hey....thanks for all the info and links. Once I actually have the cash I will definatly take some of these into concideration, however I am in the tricites area which is a good three-four hours away from the seattle and portland area.:( But if worse comes to worse I can always ship it:thumb:

i strongly would suggest marcus in auburn. He is a nice guy and very helpfull. He works at mitsubishi and get discount on parts. Too bad all the passes are crap now cuz the drive wouldn't be too bad. For me its kinda fun. Made it from auburn to spokane in 3 and a half hours with 1 stop.
