Lemme explain how it went down and gimme your ideas on what you think it could be.... Here goes.

Tonight... I was at the ''Track.... :| " and someone in a civic was wanting to run. It was running a 60shot and had a few bolt-ons, so we decided him and the talon should take it for a couple runs and see who would pull out on top.

First run, I ease out on the clutch at 4600rpms and DONT DROP IT, have him by about 2-3 cars total. So he was happy and wanted to give it one last "go round" and I happily agreed. We line up again and I do the same exact thing as far as launching wise to the car and it was closer... I won again but only by about 1 full fender. He takes it cool and wants to take a ride in the talon because hes never been in an AWD BOOSTED car before. I give him a ride down the road and decide I was going to do a launch for him just like I did when we were racing. I rev on up to 4600-5000 and get ready, I take off... I goto hit 2nd .... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIND. So I just back off and try to hit 3rd and couldnt hit 3rd either, I try fourth and its a NO GO. I wonder and Finally with the pumping of the clutch about 5 times finally get it into 2nd gear where I baby it all the way back to where people were at.

I jump out and throw it in neutral and when I left off the clutch you can hear a Loud Chatter that sounds kinda like a clutch to my knowledge. So I jump out and make sure that no fluids leaking or anything like that and theres nothing under it obivous that I noticed. So I press the clutch in and the noise goes away. It wouldnt go into ANY GEAR AT ALL, when I tried to move it into gear it just wouldnt accept it and just stayed in neutral. So finally I just kill the car and put it in 2nd and re-crank it. I warn everyone that its time for me to try to go home and I start on my way to the house. It went fine and drove fine with just a few odd sounds like it was making when I stopped and let off the clutch even tho I was in gear and moving

I'm to the point where I was to scared to try and actually STOP at a stop sign and it was in the middle of B.F.E so I just cruised on through all 3 of them. I get to a point where I had to stop and try to put it in 1st to go from the light... I put it in 1st without a problem and let off the clutch and hit the gas..nothing, not even a inch. So I try 2nd and nothing there either. I sit there for a second and let my foot off the clutch WHILE IN NEUTRAL and it starts to go forward  So I continue forward and get to my house and park it.

When its turned off you can move through the gears without a problem so I personally dont think its the tranny itself. I need to figure out weather its the tranny or the clutch that took a shit in the car.

If you got any ideas please inform me asap because I will be looking to fix this as soon as possible. If its the clutch then by all means gimme some recommendations as far as a good clutch/flywheel combo to purchase for future modification wise.

Thanks!

Did you drain your transmission fluid to see if it is silver?

Um... Not yet...

I think I'll drown myself in the dam fluid if it is. Im going to do that tommorrow.

You mean if its silver its the tranny right?
Cause to my knowledge thats what u mean :(

Sorry to pass on the bad news, but it is your throw out bearing. To get to it you're going to need to pull your tranny. Might as well repalce the clutch while your in there. Hope that helps
:(

Sounds like a throw out bearing to me.. happened to me not to long ago. It also might be a broken shift fork.. but my money is on the throw out bearing.

Agreed on the TOB diagnosis - I had something VERY similar happen to me about six months ago. The day after I did a 6000rpm launch (bad BAD idea, I'll never do it again) - I was pulling up from a light and my pedal dropped to the floor. It came back up, then started experiencing the same symptoms you had - LOUD chattering/grinding noise, unable to shift while moving - had to ge thte car home in 2nd... not fun.

In any case, changing a TOB is fun - you get to take apart 3/4 of your engine bay! ;)

(in all honestly, I learned a LOT when I did it...)

dude that chattering noise is the most horrible thing i've ever heard... 3 ####ING TIMES!!!!!! i had my tranny redone twice and its starting to do it again, but very faintly this time... i dont want to hurt it again, it shifts pretty much fine except when i try getting it into first, half the time i have a pretty hard time... would this have anything to do with my shifter bearings being worn, or the clutch?
what noise does the clutch make, cause i cant see my tranny going 3 times in a year, i've only driven it about 9000 km's this whole year

sorry to steal the thread, but you arent the only one dude. i feel for you and your monkey :thumb:

Have you ever thought that its your clutch or tob going out also. I seriously thougth last night that I bent a shift fork or blew a syncro, but according to all our Guru's on the site.... Its the TOB or the CLUTCH, I called my local mitsu dealer because I'm good friends with the manager in service and he said that it definately sounds like a clutch or a tob and you wont be able to tell which one it is without going into the tranny. So he agree's with all you guys and said to tell you "good to see some people know their shit!".

Holla!

full respect to dsmtuners :thumb:

of course i've thought about that but i mean if they didnt check that when they opened the tranny up, they're gonna get the front of my car through their front door. i'm really fed up and about to give them some real major shit. last time i had a rebuild, the 4th and 5th gears were shot aong with the rod they sat on, bearings were fine. they told me that there was no oil in the tranny, but i dont see how a tranny can dump its fluids in 3000 km's or less. i didnt think to ask about the clutch, but seriously they should have checked, and it ran fine after i got the car. i havent done one hard launch and i've kept it under 4000 rpm's since, NOT ONCE OVER. i just dont understand, but i'm not about to have them do it again, i'll go somewhere else and send them the bill.

LOL maybe there's monkeys living in my tranny, pooping on my clutch and chewing on the tranny.... *funny picture in head*

Like the guy said, have fun pulling EVERYTHING apart so you can get the tranny out. :p

Once you have the tranny out though, TOB replacement is a snap.

I been looking for someone in my area that has done this with ease that wouldnt charge two arms and a leg. But since I cant find someone Im going to bring it to a shop and have the task performed. I dont trust myself to the level of me physically pulling apart my trans to put in a clutch. Sorry guys... :(

I've decided if its the TOB I'm replacing the tob/clutch/flywheel/clutch lines and then a couple other things I got a nitch for.

Bah.

You get the control arms out of the way. Pop the axles. Unbolt the Transmission. Have a friend help you seperate it from the engine.

It's simple in theory, just a lot of stuff in the way. You could do it no problem though!

I cant because I hate to say this but.

I dont have faith in myself doing a clutch swap on my car bro. Im not trying to sound like a pud but I dont think I could do this and NOT have any problems. Ive never had any problems with the place Im probably going to end up bringing it so Ill prolly just bring it there...

If there was someone that lived around here and would seriously help me out with this then I would by all means get em to stay here a couple days or either I could put em in a Hotel if they would rather. I would love to learn and do this on my own but I just dont think I could and really dont wanna screw up anything.

That's cool man. Get it done right! :thumb:

BTW I was not trying to bash you or anything. :)

O I know.

Today I had to push it outa the garage to get it to where the wrecker could come into the yard and get it. Something I noticed today which I found is odd which makes me believe its not the TOB or the Clutch...

When in first gear it moves like its neutral. When in neutral it acts as if its in first gear. This is severly odd. When in reverse it acts as if its 4th or 5th gear and just dies if you come off the clutch.

SOMEONE... Opinions on that?

Now that the car is back together and STILL NOT BUDING an inch while its in the shop I got serious problems.

The gears will make the car die when its put in any gear what-so-ever. If i put it in 5th gear the car will stall out and die. If you put it in reverse it will do the same thing also.

If you put it in first and try to take off the car will not grab gear at all and wont move an inch. If you put it in 2nd gear and spin up and try to get off the line it probably wont move now either (dont know for sure, in the shop still). Its basically like the cars forks dosent want to let the car move at all. I seriously think its a broken fork but mitsu will not go into the tranny and touch it, so thats where I come onto here asking you guys imput.

#1- I can send my trans off to shepracing and get it rebuilt.
#2- I can buy a used tranny and have mitsu install it.
#3- I can buy a new tranny and have mitsu install it.

Keep in mind I'm on a tight tight tight budget and needing some good advise. Please gimme some imput people.

One of those 3 options will need to be taken soon because my talon is sitting at mitsu right now without a tranny and needing to have something done to get it rolling asap.

Well, time to sum up whats wrong with the tranny since shep has it now.

#1 - Shep has the best turn around time I think I've honestly ever heard of in my entire life. 5 Days!!!
#2 - Price is dam good for the work I'm having done.
#3 - He may be getting a little aggrivated with me but hes keeping his cool

The shift fork for 1-2 snapped. Shepherd said he has almost never seen a 1st-2nd fork snap, 3-4 hes seen go but never a 1-2. I talked to him about the GVR-4 first gear and hes telling me that if I street race alot then its definately not needed because that gear is good for "Rally and other things like that" and if Im going to be running alot of 1-2-3 races then its not a good mod. So Im not getting it. Im getting his 895 rebuild and a couple other things.

Just an update guys!
Figured I would let you guys/gals know what went wrong since alot of people were wondering what it could/would/should be thats broken.

Thanks all for your help so far!
