Tranny Swap 95 Tsi Into A 97tsi ???

Hey guys and gals, got a ?. i got a 97 tsi awd with a bad tranny in it. i just totaled my 95 and wanted to swap the trannys out. i was told that the gears are different from one to the other and if i do i will mess up my transfer case. something ( i dont know what) is different from the 95 to the 97. My ? is this. can i take everything, the tranny, transfer case, and rear drive axel and all, and swap them into my 97. essentialy i would be repacing from the tranny back. will this work? what am i missing in my quest to make this happen? thanx billy

My understanding the tranies were the same.

im not sure if the whole 95 tranny will bolt to the 97 engine, but i do know that the internals are not interchangable from 95 to 97 tranny
