auto to manual swap- what starter

i am 90% complete on swappin my auto to a manual and i have a problem with my starter i was under the assumption that the auto and manual starter is the same but upon installing it and tryin to turn the motor over it dosen't engage and just grinds it appears that the starter does not protrude into teh bellhousing far enough to engage? what is the problem do i need a different starter? the car is a 91 eagle talon 2.0 dohc the tranny and flywheel is from a 91 plymouth laser 2.0 dohc

they are not the same,did a swap 95 tsi auto to manual.
