I was wondering about those of you with broken transfer cases in the past? What the hell happened? Mine is making a hell of a lot of noise, what gives?

I didn't break mine, but the previous owner didn't do any maintainance, and it was worn out. The bearings were pitted, the gears were worn and everything had freeplay. There is also a tranfer case recall because some of them leak, and if you drive for long without oil it can wear out and break. The recall information can be found in the Problem Diagnosis forum, it's at the top, one of the "Hot Topics"

Transfer cases generally don't break from too much power and hard launching until the car gets into the tens.

Well, I know I had the leak problem fixed right after I got the car, but before that it couold've been low and caused the problems. We opened the case up and found a bunch of mud-like material inside, yeah i know wtf, and we useda probe to check deep inside and its covered with metal filings.
